Bryan Morse is a retired schoolteacher and a history graduate of the University of Wales. Inspired by a boyhood friendship with two American GIs, he has produced a fascinating true story of the unique situation when American soldiers were billeted in private homes in the Rhondda prior to the D-Day invasion in June 1944. The Rhondda, famous for its coal production, was also famed for its hospitality - and it lived up to its reputation.

oral history at its best
Armies are good at keeping secrets, especially during wars, and sometimes they never get discovered. For Bryan Morse it was a shock to discover that the presence of GI's in the Rhondda, which had made such an impression on him as a child, is now virtually unknown and has never been officially acknowledged. Thus he set out to record his memories, and the result is enjoyable. His research is meticulous, and the mixture of memories and facts is a pleasure to read. Local history is enjoying something of a come-back and Mr Morse's A Moment in History (the correct title) fits snugly into this niche.
Well worth reading.
