Product Description

JVC's ultra-slim XVN33SL DVD player has about as much audio playback as video, having been optimised for the high-audio sampling frequency of 192 kHz, providing extra-wide dynamic range to realise the benefits of high-spec sources. Even CD playback benefits from higher-bit digital decoding. You want quality and convenience? Try format compatibility with DVD-video, VCD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD, and MP3 CD.

The model's 10-bit, 54 MHz video sampling frequency ensures detailed images and clear, pure colours for DVD movies. And, with seven parameters to adjust, the unit's Video Fine Processor (VFP) provides exceptional versatility in fine-tuning images to personal preferences. The player provides a choice of either optical or coaxial digital-audio output for routing Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1-channel surround signals to a compatible audio/video receiver.

A high-resolution onscreen graphical user interface (GUI) allows Windows-like interactive operation with tool bars superimposed onto the TV screen for simple, point-and-click operation. Other conveniences include AV CompuLink (which optimises performance when using the player in conjunction with other JVC equipment), Quick Start, multi-region compatibility, 1.5x playback with sound, 13-step zoom, and screen fill (which zooms in on a DVD image to eliminate letterbox "bars" on the TV screen).

    A real gem4
JVC have managed to cram so much into this slimline player, it's incredible. The picture is incredibly sharp - even using a cheap scart lead. Scart lead not included.

The reason I bought it was because of its ability to play different types of discs - I recently purchased a philips dvdr70 recorder, and needed another player which was compatible with DVD+RW discs. Although the box does not mention it being compatible with +RW, it did mention -RW, and after checking JVC's own product spec web page, I took the chance - and my luck held out. I use Infiniti brand DVD+RW discs, and this jvc plays them back without a hitch - I am confident that it could playback any brand of discs.

The remote is easy to use, and the system is jam packed with features - some of which you can only get to if you use the menu bar. The AtoB repeat feature is hidden behind one of the menu options.

There is a very handy x1.8 zoom which is excellent. Some players start their zoom level at x4 which means that you get an extremely pixelly grainy result. 1.8 zoom during playback means that you can zoom into an area of the screen and still watch footage to a decent level of quality. Some players only offer zoom on a still freeze-frame - by this unit will zoom during video playback. Another neat feature is that you can pan around with the zoom on, so that you are not resticted to zooming the centre of the screen. This zoom works great for removing the black bars on letterbox widescreen movies.

This unit also plays back jpeg images - I stuck in a CDR disc with contained some jpeg pictures - all different sizes, and in different directories on the disc. Within the blink of an eye the player offered an easy to use on-screen menu which allowed me to view the images individually from different folders or grouped. The quality of the jpegs is breathtaking - wait 'til you try. There was no need to convert the images in any way. You can even zoom & pan into these images.

The VFP (very fine picture - i think) button on the remote lets you fine tune the picture by adjusting the brightness, gamma level etc

Player had variable bi-directional slow motion speeds as well as different scan speeds for forward and reverse.

    This players is multiregion.

I have only had the player for one day, but already am delighted with my new gadget.

    Negative points

The disc tray looks a bit wobbly and feeble - so i wouldn't go pressing on it when feeding a disk. I guess that's the price you pay if you want to make something as slim as the n33.

Contrary to belief and a few websites this player does NOT have optical out - its got coax digital out, but it does not have the little square socket for connecting to some home cinema surround sound systems - you have been warned. This caught me out.

Too many leads spoils the picture. In the box there's a bright orange card which warns you NOT to attach too many video leads at the same time, otherwise the picture gets distorted. I have currently attached a scart to the single scart socket, and also used the svideo socket - both are currently providing a clear picture simultaneously (touch wood!)

Does exactly what it says on the tin.5
An excellent product -- smart, compact, user-friendly, and versatile.

The JVC XV-N33SL has a quality look and feel, and is very light and compact. It was extremely easy to install. The instructions are clear and comprehensive and the machine is simple to use. Picture and sound quality is superb using a basic SCART lead. Playing of DVD's is totally straightforward, but a number of more sophisticated features are available if required. The JPEG feature is excellent -- a CD/R can be put in the unit straight from the PC's CD burner and pictures shown on the TV screen easily, either individually or as a slide show.

Altogether a superb product, just what I wanted, and excellent value for money.

    JVC XV-N33SL Multi-Region5
Despite its moderate price tag, JVC's XV-N33SL player does not seem to be missing any features at all -- it fully supports all manner of writable DVD media, as well as other formats, such as jpeg, etc., while still offering excellent picture quality. This player can be considered truly multi-region -- I've played DVD-Rs, Video CDs, NTSC DVDs, all without a problem. The unit is slim and attractive, while it's also sturdy and solid in construction. It's also compact enough to fit into smaller TV cabinets. The player's on-screen menu is clear and logically presented, so adjusting settings and configuration is hassle-free, while the supplied remote control (batteries are included for this) is also logically set out and well made.

There is little to fault. The DVD tray/drawer seems somewhat flimsy in comparison to the rest of the unit, but this is a minor thing. Also, a Scart lead does not come supplied with this player -- this may need to be purchased seperately. Overall, the player is well-featured, truly supports multi-region media, is robustly constructed and functions exactly as it should. Recommended.
