Manufacturer's Description
Sony's new sleek and slender DVP-NS355 DVD player features built-in MP3 decoding, DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW (video mode) playback. With Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive and new Precision Drive3 systems, you'll get a picture that is more faithful to the source, video or film, and virtually free of errors that warped discs can produce. High-quality image playback is facilitated using a 12bit/54Mhz Video; while SCART and composite video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

A 192 kHz 24-bit digital-to-analogue audio converter ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats. A Dolby DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signal can be routed through the player's optical digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: Sony's TV Virtual Surround (with four surround modes) simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV).

Playback options include quick set-up, disc resume, DVD/CD Text, custom parental control memory, Advanced Smooth Scan and Smooth Slow Modes, instant replay and instant search. Supplied accessories include a remote control that operates the DVD player and many brands of television and a standard A/V cable. Please note that a SCART cable is NOT included.

    Multi-region compatibility.5
I think the reason most people are having problems is that whilst the dvd is multi-region it outputs NTSC & some television can't handle it. My old dvd player and a lot of other dvd players convert NTSC to pal, therefore the tv can display it correctly. On my television it would only work via scart 1 as scart 2 would not cope with ntsc (as is the case on some televisions). So if you want this dvd player I recommend you check your Tv can handle NTSC. I think this is the reason why their are mixed reports as to multi-region working & why their older dvd players may have been ok.

    Excellent basic DVD player5
This is a very good basic multi-region DVD player. The picture and sound quality are both very good and I have had no problems with it at all. It worked straight out of the box and so far I have played region 1 and region 2 DVD, commercial VCD, home created VCD and DVD all without any problems.

    It's a SONY!5
This DVD player is just superb. I bought it because it can play a DVD from any country - very handy if you travel to the USA for your holidays.
The machine detects region 1 NTSC instantly, with no difference in the picture quality. It is easy to operate with a well laid out remote.
DVD +/- RW/R all play great. JPEG phot discs - no problem!
I don't think you can go wrong with this SONY player.
