Great Product
Owned one for 10 months and overall very pleased with the functions and quality of the video output. It also has a viewfinder (many other hdd camcorders don't) - adds a little to the weight but makes it much easier filming, compared to trying to peer into an lcd screen in bright sunlight!
The editing software supplied is too basic and Sony flatly refused to advise on compatible editing software packages when I asked them - great customer service!! Since discovered that ulead video studio 10 is compatible and can capture directly from this model.
Sony should stick to games consoles
Sony, a leader in the games console market, (well was once), has brought out a camcorder which looks great on paper, but delivers well below par.
The touch screen is great, yes the lens is quality, 30gb of hard drive space, wow. But hold on, what is this? No built in light? So filming in dark areas is impossible. Unless you want to use the Nightshot function, which turned some of my wedding video into a scene from the Predator movies. 5.1 surround sound, is available, if you want to spend the cash on the microphones.
And the software bundled with it, has been bundled together. Great if you want to simply cut films up and burn them on to a DVD but any other type of video editing is a no go area.
Avoid this camera if you want to produce anything of quality, if you simply want to take snap shots and then rig the camera up to your tele for a quick viewing experience then this is the camera for you.
Another Great Sony product
For the novice to the experienced home video, this camera is superb. Usually Sony offer quality products and this does not disappoint.
Image Quality (HD)- very very good, especially if you have a HD TV, the quality is awesome, and one is the greatest features it the anti-shake images, which work very well. Only at the max zoom, does your shaky footage begin, before this, it is tripod quality.
Sound - Unreal surround sound system, when I talk behind the camera, and replay the footage through the home cinema system, my voice appears behind me! It is clear and sharp and picks up everything.
Software - this is the best Sony software I have seen in simplicity of use. It is clear and easy to understand, so much so OAPs would be able to edit and burn their footage. Some nice touches like audio only, which can be layered onto the video footage.
Camera itself - easy to use for the no brainers, and it has enough features to keep an enthusiast happy. The touch screen is beautifully simplistic and such a good asset for the camera. Review your footage and bin the crap.
Battery - last longer than I thought it would. There are upgrades available, but for a dabbler, this is more than enough.
If you get this camera, I doubt you will need to buy an upgrade or new camera for 10years plus, or until such times as "holo" TV comes out.
Sony, as ever, fail to disappoint.
