About the Author
Regarded by his contemporaries as one of the best cabinetmakers, the late Ernest Joyce not only supervised his own hand workshop but also acted as part-time Head of Furniture at one of the leading Colleges of Art until his retirement in 1969. Alan Peters carried out a 7-year apprenticeship to Edward Barnsley followed by a two-year spell at college on a craft teacher-training course. He then won a scholarship to the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London to study interior design. He established his first workshop in 1962, and moved down to Devon in 1973. He has won numerous awards and honours throughout his professional career, and in 1986 his work was the subject of a one-man touring exhibition. In 1984 he published Cabinet-Making: The Professional Approach.

The furniture makers bible.5
If you are a furniture maker and wanted to purchase one book on furniture making and the relevant techniques, this is the book to invest in. I spent five years at Buckinghamshire College studying furniture design and craftsmanship and this is the book recommended to all students.
The book covers every aspect of making furniture including materials, tools, equipment, construction, fixtures and fittings, setting out, draughtsmanship and includes examples of completed furniture designs.
When I am starting a new project and require information, on say construction or fixtures and fittings I always find an answer to my question in this book.
It is worth the money.

Bible for woodworkers5
Joyce is the standard text for furniture makers. I don't know a single decent designer maker out there that doesn't have a copy on their bookshelf. If you take your furniture making seriously then you'll find this an invaluable resource.

Your second book on woodworking5
Working with my brains most of the day for money, i decided on woodworking as my balancing hobby. My first problem was where to start in all aspects of woodworking such as tools, wood and joints. I had a book for beginners, but the projects and materials shown in there were terrible and I soon grew out of it. After buying lots of other books on specialized topics, I found this book by Joyce. Yes you feel it's age in text and drawings, but this should have been my second book. All joints, all techniques and all the construction details I will ever need are in there, and information about tools and wood. Not a book to read from front to cover, but to study a selected topic at night on how to proceed with the project at hand the next day.
