Excellent for beginners who want to get it right
This book is for anyone who has finished some DIY or projects involving wood, and looked at the end product wondering why it does not look as good as the example of TV and why it took such a long time as well.
This book will help you change that experience as it applies a simple concept, keeping it simple. The book takes the reader through the basic steps of what you should have been doing all this time and then walks you through the different finishes that you see the master craftsman showing you at the end of their shows.
There are plenty of tips to problems encountered and the advice saved two of my projects from looking like someone had dropped finish from about 5 feet.
It is not something that you need to read cover to cover, go over the first 3 chapters, then dip in and out as you need to get the job done right.
It is a little bit American, not surprisingly, and so some of the products are not 'over here', but this detracts nothing from the content.
Brilliant book
If you want to know *anything* with regards to wood finishing... GET THIS BOOK. Absolutely brilliant book. Bob has taken a scientific approach to the chemistry of wood finishing and hence in simple terms presents to the reader an exacting insight into the products used and therefore how best to apply and use them. The secrecy behind wood finishing is therefore laid bare.
The only thing I will say as a passing comment is that this is an American book and some minor 'translation' is needed on behalf of the British reader.
A Must have for all finishers
An excellent book that fully details the application and restoration of finishes that have been water/heat damaged etc. A thorough understanding and passion is imparted by the author who writes the book for the woodworker. It removes the uncertainty/doubt about trying a new technique or finish.
Together with the "New Wood Finishing Book" by M. Dresdner - you will have a great start to your finishing library.
