Product Description

Built-in furniture offers many advantages over freestanding furniture: less expensive to build; built to suit your existing interior style; maximize the available space - the ultimate design solution. In this work, home design author Jim Toplin takes the reader through the complete processs for designing and constructing built-in units, from window seats, benches and couches to bookcases, cupboards and cabinets. He draws from historical precedents such as colonial-style storage cupboards, as well as from contemporary requirements such as a family-room audio-visual centre. He also shows readers how to harmonize permanent feature into their home environments.

Built-in Furniture: A Gallery of Design Ideas for the Home3
I bought this book for inspiration and ideas. The photos are unfaultable and the layout lovely. Unfortunately, it did not help with ideas, because I do not live in a massive house in America, but in a semi in Somerset. This book is unrealistic for people who cannot afford designers and mansions and was a bit of a let down for my particular needs.

Useful resource for someone building a custom home with built-in furniture and storage4
This book is useful for anyone building a custom home who wants lots of wooden built-in furniture and storage. The pictures are lush, and the ideas plentiful. I don't know if a woodworker would find it useful, but as someone in the process of planning a customized home, I find Tolpin's work the most helpful way to show my architect what I had in mind.

Imagination4
Ditto the previous reviewer about suitability for small British houses.
However, as it's written by an American for Americans, I'm willing to let that slide as while I wouldn't be able to use the projects as shown, this is an ideas book - a starter to get the imagination going.
eg. I got an idea for a tilt down dinner table from the murphy bed. I don't have space in my living room for a permanent dinner table (wouldn't be able to see the TV!), so having one that only comes out when necessary is ideal.
