Manufacturer's Description
BRITA Elemaris Cool Black water filter jug.
Tap water in the UK is perfectly safe. However, it doesn't always taste, look or smell as pleasant as we'd like, and the effect can be noticeable not only in drinking water but in hot drinks and food cooked in water.
BRITA water filter products use a mixture of carbon and ion exchange resin to remove hardness, chlorine, heavy metals such as lead and copper, and other organic impurities to improve the taste, smell and appearance of cold and hot drinks.
The Elemaris water filter jug uses the BRITA Maxtra cartridge for 20% better limescale reduction. It features a pour-through lid for easier one-handed filling, a soft-grip handle and anti-slip rubber base. Suitable for keeping inside the refrigerator, Elemaris Cool features 'Memo', the electronic cartridge exchange indicator to remind users when to change the cartridge. It holds 1.4 litres filtered water, or 2.4 litres in total. It is scratch resistant and dishwasher safe (excluding lid.)

Good for hard water areas
I live in a hard water area and was getting fed up with the chalky taste of the tap water. This product is amazing, once the water has been filtered it tastes sweet and smooth. I even fill the kettle up with it and I haven't had to de-scale it once in 5 months!
As with another review I disagree with how often Brita say you should change the filter. I don't even bother setting it now. I'd say if you use it like I do (2-4 refills per day) then you can easily get away with using the same filter for nearly two months before you begin to notice any difference in water quality. I've had this product 5 months now and I've only changed the filter twice.
So if you live in a hard water area and you're getting fed up with buying bottled water then this not only produces better tasting water but it works out a lot cheaper in the long run too. I just wish Brita developed a filter for washing machines!
Does the job but misleading and expensive
Like many Brita products, this jug carries the digital countdown timer which tells you when you "need" a new Maxtra cartridge. This is very misleading for 2 reasons:
1. It assumes you run way through the jug several times a day (which I don't - I only fill it every other day).
2. It implies that Maxtra cartridges cease to function after 4 weeks of regular use (they don't - I've checked the water quality using a conductivity probe at work - they're good for a fair bit longer than that!).
The above two problems can mean you'd spend a fortune on the Maxtra cartridges, which don't come cheap, but if you ignore the timer and change the cartridge when the water starts to taste unfiltered, it's fine.
The jug itself is well-made, stylish and fits into the door of the fridge, so you can have filtered, cold water ready-to-go all of the time. Aside from the timer and the expensive cartridges, I can't really fault this other than to say that it's very, very expensive for what it is.
Very nice filter system. Looks the part, too!
I wanted a water filter for my posh coffee machine. I live in a hard water area and was fed up with descaling the beast, so opted for a Britas unit.
I was originally going to get one of the XL units, but I am glad I didn't. With this unit I can fill it and have filtered water in under a minute. If I had a larger unit, I would only end up leaving half the water in the jug. As the coffee machine prefers freshly drawn water this would just be a waste. I guess if you had a huge family then the XL would be better. But I was more than satisfied with this.
This unit should fit in most fridges too.
