A welcome addition to the ranks of good crime writers
Stuart MacBride's hero DS Logan MacRae is a detective in the classic mould. Wounded, flawed, with a disastrous love life and prone to maverick behaviours. He is sympathetic and entertaining and the supporting cast in this first novel of both senior and junior officers are believeable and interesting. The plot, which revolves around disappearing children is strong and complex and sustained right to the end. I recommend this book, and enjoyed it so much myself I have just ordered the next two in the series.
Listen to the audio CDs!
I have yet to actually read one of Stuart MacBride's books, because instead I started listening to them on audio CD. They are read by John Sessions, who is absolutely brilliant at bringing all the characters to life. He injects the story telling with excellent pace and really brings the humour out. I can completely imagine each character and the places described. The stories are excellent and are thrilling to listen to while stuck in the traffic! Try the audio CDs, you won't be disappointed.
Far Fetched + Inaccurate
Being both an Aberdonian + Police Officer feel well qualified to state - No one has for years referred to Female Police Officers as WPC's which I found particularly irritating. In addition no police officer I've ever worked with in Scotland uses the term 'form'
I was amazed as totally unrealistically dead toddlers either appeared or live ones disappeared - Totally unbelievable!!!
