The CDs I've been listening to - spring '07
Britten: Peter GrimesBritten: Peter Grimes by Peter Pears
Buy new: £9.88 / Used from: £6.49
Peter Grimes is the most incredibly dramatic piece of music ever written. And although I don't really like Pears' voice, he sings Grimes like Britten wanted it to be sung...
Artemis Quartet - Ligeti: String Quartet Nos 1 & 2Artemis Quartet - Ligeti: String Quartet Nos 1 & 2
Buy new: £13.69 / Used from: £8.16
This (String Quartet No. 1) is one of the best pieces of chamber music I know (and this recording does the attitude of the music justice)
Adès: Powder Her FaceAdès: Powder Her Face
Buy used from: £25.52
This opera is brutally dramatic and bitterly sincere. An incredibly moving and ingeniously composed work – perhaps better on stage than in a CD player, but then buy this until you can get tickets!
Schubert: Die Forelle and Other LiederSchubert: Die Forelle and Other Lieder
Buy new: £13.69 / Used from: £4.26
Unbelievably beautiful singing of unbelievably beautiful songs. A brilliant choice of lieder to combine into one perfect CD.
Cikada String Quartet - In due Tempi - Saariaho / Cage / MadernaCikada String Quartet - In due Tempi - Saariaho / Cage / Maderna by Bruno Maderna
Buy new: £12.69
Although the Saariaho and Maderna are both good in their own right, the John Cage is the piece that will blow you away…
Cloudburst and other choral worksCloudburst and other choral works by Polyphony
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £5.70
Whitacre’s sexilicious choral writing combined with Polyphony’s impeccable singing is enough to make you simply weep with pleasure - I kid you not.
Adès Asyla: Chamber and Orchestral WorksAdès Asyla: Chamber and Orchestral Works
Buy new: £10.88 / Used from: £3.49
I considered putting every CD Adès has made onto this list, but I decided to leave it here… But buy ANY of his CDs and you can’t go wrong. They’re all breathtaking – he is a stunningly clever composer
Pilgrimage To SantiagoPilgrimage To Santiago
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £8.41
The music’s good on this CD, but what really stood out was the god-like quality of the sound made by the Monteverdi Choir. These are sung so absolutely perfectly, it makes you wish you were a monk.
Varése: The Complete WorksVarése: The Complete Works by Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Buy new: £9.88 / Used from: £9.96
Varèse started interest in electronic experimentation in classical music. I love it - and even if you don’t - it will, at the very least, make you think profoundly about the whole concept of music.
Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring; the Firebird SuiteStravinsky: The Rite of Spring; the Firebird Suite by Leonard Bernstein
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £3.90
This is a fantastic recording of one of the biggest milestones in musical history – Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. And the Firebird isn’t bad either, I suppose…
Opus Number ZooOpus Number Zoo
Buy new: £11.69 / Used from: £7.99
Hilariously fun 20th century wind quintets – very well played and a good range of composing styles (Berio, Hindemith, Carrapatoso, Ligeti, Ibert…)
Messiaen: Turangalila SymphonyMessiaen: Turangalila Symphony
Buy used from: £10.96
These are the best recordings I’ve heard of both of these pieces
Schoenberg: Verklarte Nacht; Chamber Symphonies Nos 1 & 2 [IMPORT]Schoenberg: Verklarte Nacht; Chamber Symphonies Nos 1 & 2 [IMPORT]
Buy used from: £9.98
A fantastic introduction to Arnold Schöenberg’s pre-serialist music – three amazing pieces
The King`s SingersThe King`s Singers
Buy new: £4.89 / Used from: £2.19
The King’s Singers are so much fun! And its true – they are the “best thing to have hit London since the Surprise Symphony”…
Luigi Dallapiccola: Due Pezzi; Variazioni; Dialoghi; Three Questions with Two AnswersLuigi Dallapiccola: Due Pezzi; Variazioni; Dialoghi; Three Questions with Two Answers
Buy new: £13.69 / Used from: £7.49
Dallapiccola manipulates serialism in the most incredible ways. An inspired combination of music on this CD.
Britten: Les Illuminations; Quatre Chansons françaises; SerenadeBritten: Les Illuminations; Quatre Chansons françaises; Serenade
Buy new: £6.79
Anthony Rolfe Johnson is by a long way the best Britten interpreter I’ve heard. The Serenade here is second only to Peter Grimes itself in terms of Britten’s sheer inspired genius.
Sonatine, Piano Sonata No. 1, Derive, Memoriale (Boulez)Sonatine, Piano Sonata No. 1, Derive, Memoriale (Boulez) by Pierre Boulez
Buy new: £4.89 / Used from: £2.91
Again, a good introduction to an important composer. Boulez took serialism to another level, and this is a fantastically interesting CD
