Bulgaria's charms include the secluded coves scattered along the Black Sea coastline; nature reserves; rugged mountainous scenery, with a wealth of wild flowers, birds and mammals; and several flourishing ski resorts. This corner of eastern Europe can also boast nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, all included in detail in the Bradt guide. It includes special sections on Bulgarian food, wine, birding and natural history that bring out the best of the country. It also provides detailed information on the capital, Sofia.

The definitive guide to Bulgaria
The Bradt Guide to Bulgaria, written by Dr Annie Kay, is the most comprehensive guide yet to this beautiful, rapidly changing, country in the far South East corner of Europe. Annie is a historian, a tour guide, an ornithologist, a nature lover and now a part-time resident in Bulgaria. Her interests are reflected in the book; there are beautiful colour photographs of buildings, birds and butterflies, explanations of the historical issues facing Bulgaria (eg the Macedonian question), up-to-date maps, tourist and travel information and even a section on how to purchase property in Bulgaria (citing her own flat purchase as a case study). Annie manages to capture the flavour of the people through their culture such that you can imagine the tobacco drying, the traditional costumes, the 'horo' dances and festival days celebrated in the imposing mountains. This book achieves so much more than being a guide for skiers and beach lovers, although they too will be well directed in their holidays. Annie uncovers the variety of delights in Bulgaria - from the gorges and the mountains to the plains and the beaches. I strongly recommend this encyclopaedic book to accompany you if you are to extract the gems on offer in this beautiful, fascinating country.
The best there is on Bulgaria
Comprehensively covers all the useful areas of how to get there, where to stay and eat, and the best places to see, etc. However, the in-depth coverage of wildlife, museums, history and culture written with the author's obvious love of the country coming through every word makes this compelling reading. I didn't want to stop reading this book, it's real value for money.
Avoid - Better guides available
Disappointing guide, the author seems more interested in bird-watching possibilities than providing practical information such as access from the airport to the town or the ease of train travel vs. flying is like.
Given that rough guides and lonely planet have recently come out with revised versions, I wouldn't choose this guide given the choice again.
