Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Legendary prog-rock experimentalists and perennial best-sellers Pink Floyd collect all of their studio albums in this extensive box set. From the dense psychedelia and complex improvisational structures of 1967's 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' all the way up to the thematic confusions of 1994's 'The Division Bell', the story of one of Britain's most influential and successful acts is encapsulated on 'Oh By The Way'. This lavish box set also includes artwork from regular Pink Floyd collaborator Storm Thorgerson and bonus material.

Customer Reviews

Oh dear...4
That Pink Floyd were/are one of the greatest rock bands ever I don't seriously think anyone could dispute.

Nor do I think this box set is awful; in fact, most of the albums in it are brilliant!

However, and it is a big "however", Pink Floyd were about the music and this box set seems to be more about the packaging.

No remastering.
No rare tracks.
No enhanced audio (why no SACD/DVD-A content? I know these formats aren't exactly runaway successes but it still would add a valid reason to buy the box set)

So once I've put the disc in my player and I'm lost in "Wish You Were Here" there is no difference to just buying the albums. Which I have already done a couple of times.

As a way of purchasing all the albums it probably works out a similar price to buying them individually so to sum it up:-

If you want to buy the Pink Floyd albums and you haven't got them already, BUY THIS! You won't be disappointed.

If you have all the remastered albums, I wouldn't bother.

Excellent music, mediocre packaging.3
The music in the boxset is excellent and is available on the various 1990's Pink Floyd remasters.

The packaging - in vinyl replica format - is disappointing. Some of the gatefold covers are misaligned when folded, the printing on the covers and inner sleeves on some albums is fuzzy, The inner sleeve for CD2 of The Wall has the lyrics of Side 3 printed on both sides of the sleeve, the outer black plastic bag for Wish You Were Here is larger than it should be, etc.

EMI Europe should take a better look at the outstanding Japanese mini-LP editions next time they release another boxset in this format.

Willing Victim4
I think that people here are missing the point a bit; Record Labels exist for one reason, that's to make money for their shareholders - it's an illusion to think that anything is put out for the benefit of the consumer. The Floyd demographic is of an audience that is middle aged and thereby (relatively) well off, the sort that can manage an indulgence like this. And however much people desire the out takes etc, they're not going to come. That's why we have bootlegs; and you could imagine the howls of protest if the box did have a rarities disc - What? i have to shell out £140+ just to get one CD of out takes etc. etc.

The concept is pretty neat; each CD reissued in a replica of the vinyl sleeve with all the little bits - stickers, posters etc. - that accompanied the originals. This is a concept originally started in Japan where the Floyd discs have already been issued in this format; they look good and it's a way better way to package the music rather than a clunky clam case.

The music is top rate, only Atom Heart Mother has perhaps not aged well although The Final Cut was always perhaps a step too far in Waters Floyd world, but the rest of it stands the test of time. In fact Floyd along with Led Zeppelin are perhaps the only two rock bands to have released consistently top rate albums throughout their career.

I'll buy this, it looks neat and I don't have a lot of the LPs anyway. If you object to the consumer baiting tactics on display, exercise your rights and don't buy it.

Post script: received the box 13th December, the Wall set included in the box has two copies of disc 1 and is missing disc 2. Guess the joke really is on me.... If you're buying this set as gift for someone, it's perhaps a good idea to check the contents are all present and correct. Another victory for the shoddy corporates....
