Joseph Vaughan's life has been dogged by tragedy. Growing up in the 1950s, he was at the centre of series of killings of young girls in his small rural community. The girls were taken, assaulted and left horribly mutilated. Barely a teenager himself, Joseph becomes determined to try to protect his community and classmates from the predations of the killer. Despite banding together with his friends as ' The Guardians', he was powerless to prevent more murders - and no one was ever caught. Only after a full ten years did the nightmare end when the one of his neighbours is found hanging from a rope, with articles from the dead girls around him. Thankfully, the killings finally ceased. But the past won't stay buried - for it seems that the real murderer still lives and is killing again. And the secret of his identity lies in Joseph's own history...

Absolutely Amazing!!
First off i will admit i'm not much of a reader at all but when a friend recommended this i thought why not? I'm really glad my friend really pushed me to read it because it is simply one of the best books you will read. The author has a gift and was born to write. I won't say anything about the book but just trust me and read this book! You won't regret it!!
Extraordinary
I started reading Ellory's books from the most recent backwards to his first and have loved them all in slightly different degrees. This is perhaps my favourite. It still amazes me that a guy from Birmingham can write so authentically about life in the U.S. I recommend it highly and can't wait for the next one. Keep em coming Rog !!
Did I like this or not?
I felt compelled to write something about this book, though I actually listened to the full length audio book.
Did I enjoy this?
I am not so sure, I couldn't stop listening to it as it was really addictive, it felt that there was not much going on and wanted to stop it because of this but I really wanted to find out what it was all about. I really wanted this to be have a happy ending.....
Did I enjoy this?
Whenever I see it in the bookstore it gives me a shudder, it felt I lived this persons life and I have fond memories of this.
Did I enjoy this, I think the answer is yes. Reminded me of how I felt when I saw One flew over the cuckoos nest. 'What was that about?' Dunno, but it was good.
