Product Description

This new title from Crimson Publishing is another in the classic Pathfinder Walks series, using Ordnance Survey mapping. As in all titles in the series, each walk is accompanied by colour mapping and clear directions, with full-colour photographs throughout. The 28 walks are graded according to length and accompanied by extensive information and advice for walkers. Norfolk has a not wholly justified reputation for being flat. The flat fenland in the far west of the county is, however, a distinct region, shared with other counties and being drained by a complicated system of rivers, dykes and sluices. A similar landscape can be seen in the east of the county where the rivers Bure and Yare, but the rest of the county offers scenery aptly described by Ronald Blythe as carrying undulation to the most subtle limits. The north Norfolk coast is an area of outstanding natural beauty, providing outstanding walking along cliffs and beaches, with excellent opportunities for observing the abundant coastal wildlife. To the east, the Norfolk Broads is a unique area of lakes along rivers meandering towards the sea. They not only provide recreation but also have a special flora and fauna. Norfolk's legacy of medieval country churches centre on the numerous villages, many of which are of special historic interest. Several country estates also allow access to their extensive parkland, providing another type of walking. Thetford Forest, which covers much of the south-west of the county, also provides a deal of excellent walking unlike that in the rest of the county.

Excellent walking guides5
These guides are brilliant. The walks are arranged with the shortest at the beginning of the book and the longest at the end, so if you haven't done much walking you can ease yourself in gently.

Each walk is detailed over about five pages. There is a Ordnance Survey map showing the complete walk, though they are not large and I would therefore advise you to take a 1:25000 map of the area and a compass that you know how to use. There is a general description of the walk with points corresponding to the map and advice on where to park the car or catch a bus.

I would consider the Pathfinder series to be the best available, as the descriptions of the walks compared to my experiences of these walks mean that the authors must have actually done them.

Good variety of walks but too much on the road.4
As always with this series, the walks are well described and vary nicely in difficulty. Unfortunately there is a bit of a tendency to include a lot of road walking in this one... perhaps unavoidable given Norfolk's tendency to put all the good paths by the coast, but I've seen better get-arounds (notable the Cornwall book). We enjoyed exploring but after a long weekend, our feet hurt!
