Don't bother with more expensive models - BUY THIS ONE!
The first thing I noticed about the 390cc-3 is that despite its RRP being £90 cheaper than my old Braun 790cc, both shavers are almost identical. A quick comparison confirmed that the heads are exactly the same, both having the 3-stage cutting & FreeFloat systems. Both also use Braun's Clean & Renew system. The only thing the 390cc-3 is lacking is the Series 7's Sonic Technology which I didn't even notice was absent when I shaved with it, only when I checked the box afterwards. So unless you feel this is worth forking out an extra £90 for (and I don't particularly) then you can't go wrong with the 390cc-3.

Another thing the 390cc-3 & 790cc have in common is both provide what is by far the most comfortable & close electric shave I have ever experienced. I only shave around 2-3 times a week but even with my tricky stubble, the foils don't get too hot & I am always left with a comparatively smooth, rash-free finish. I guess this means the 3-Stage Cutting System for combatting different lengths of stubble really works - it's not as close as a Gillette Fusion wet shave but it's not a million miles off, either. Not only does it shave well, but the 390cc-3 is also a sexy looking beast & feels good to hold, with a slim body that feels secure in my hand, even when wet. Its battery-life indicator is also nice & clear, holding 45 minutes of charge.

If you're not familiar with Braun's Clean & Renew system, it consists of a plastic pot which your shaver stands head-down in. This recharges the battery & cleans the head with its alcohol-based cleaning solution. You can also rinse it under the tap, although this isn't quite as effective. At first, I thought this was a bit of a gimmick - Braun trying to get shaver users to fork out for cleaning fluid since they aren't buying disposable blades or foam. But when I remember how clogged up my old shaver used to get with bits of stubble which I couldn't get out, it's not something I want to go back to. It really is like using a new, fresh-smelling shaver each time.

The Braun 390cc-3 looks good, feels good & performs well. Don't bother forking out more for a more expensive Braun with exactly the same heads - the 390cc-3 has everything you need.

Much better than my last 3 Philips Coolskin Models....!
Like many, I have quite sensitive skin when it comes to shaving and have used a Philips coolskin shaver for the past 8 years. These were always about 40% more than the standard models, I paid it so I could use them in the shower with the king of shaves sensitive gel being applied beforehand to lessen the discomfort.

About 4 months ago I recently purchased the new slimmer Coolshave model from Philips and found it really irritated my skin. As they have changed the head design, it gives a good shave around the chin area, but cannot get the neck hairs, so you had to really apply pressure to try and get them. It would then periodically pull them which obviously hurts. My neck then came up with spots, as the blades just cannot cope...... DON'T BUY THE NEW THIN PHILIPS COOLSHAVE MODELS.

We then come to this Braun 3 390cc. For those of you that have not spotted, this is the same model as the £65 version on Amazon, but is the NEW just released model. I decided to pay the bit extra to get this over the small saving to go with the older model. I was told they have improved the head design on this model. I have never owned a Braun before, but appreciated the many reviews on Amazon.

I looked at the Braun 3, 5 & 7 models, but could not honestly see any benefit of using them over this Braun 3 390cc model. I actually prefer the slightly smaller size of this model too. I charged it for 4 hours, as per the instructions for the 1st charge and then tried it out. What a smooth & comfortable experience! No pulls on neck hairs and it did a great job. I managed to shave in probably a third of the time it took me to use the philips coolskin, as with that shaver, I had to re shave 3-4 times in one session. With this Braun, there was no need to apply oil on my face beforehand, no need for water or gel either, so that will save me money!
Today I shaved after 2 days of growth and again no pulling of neck hairs, no rash and a VERY smooth shave once again. I am converted so well done Braun for producing a competitively priced, top quality & smart shaver! I am also impressed by the 2 year warranty for peace of mind.

I have not used the cleaning system yet, but probably will do once a month, as I don't think it needs it weekly if you are shaving every day. I have just pulled off the head unit and have given it a quick blow to remove the shavings. Great.

I love the fact that the shaver charging lead can be used by itself, plugging directly into the shaver when away from home, or in the cleaning unit if you need to use that. Also the neat black hard case is a blessing that comes free with the Braun. I need this when on holiday With my Philips coolskin, it only had a soft case which was not as protective.

The closest electric shaver I have used
I have been using a Philishave for over 22 years, and just recently switched to a wet razor. Therefore, I approach the Braun without any expectations or any bias.

The first thing that hits you is the size. It is like holding a microphone or an old "brick" mobile phone from years gone by. That said, the build quality is excellent and sturdy, and the weight seems just right so that prolonged shaving is fine without any strains or pains. There does not appear to be too much vibration as I was expecting even though the cutting heads move back and forth, unlike the Philishave rotating blades.

On the skin, the foil feels fine and it does not tug the longer hairs. On the lip part, you can lock the heads for a more precise cut. The shave is a more natural up and down stroke and does not feel a chore to use. As with all electric shavers, it is recommended that you pull tight the skin and shave against the grain, but also to shave before washing. I am used to shaving after washing. However, a good shaver depends entirely upon the final smoothness of the skin. I was really impressed by how smooth my skin felt after the shave, with hardly any stubble felt at all, and the closeness seems to last almost the whole day.

On the back is a trimmer. To lift it up, press the small lock in and slide it up. This will trim any sideburns and is very effective. The cleaning is easy. Just life the head off and empty out the hairs. A quick wash under a hot tap and all is clean for next time.

The case supplied looks the part, and houses the shaver well. It feel quality, not a cheap afterthought.

The main base unit acts as a charger and cleaner. Press the side button and it lifts up to insert the solution. Be careful when taking the cap of the solution, as the last bit is a little hard and a good pull is required. This resulted in a small spillage on the floor. Hold it down on a table and you should be fine. To clean the shaver, the shaver goes in upside down and press the top button to lock it and start the charge/clean cycle. This pulsates the shaver for 45 seconds or so to clean it and the remainder is used to drain and dry the heads. The end result is a clean shaver head smelling of lemon.

The only 2 drawbacks so far is that there was no plastic cover to protect the heads. I though a cover would be essential as the foils seems more fragile than the rotary heads (I could be wrong).
The other drawback is the price. For what is probably a cosmetic upgrade to the earlier model, there is a large price increase. There could be more technology in this version, but if so, why not give it a different number? This could be confusing. As I have not tried the model this replaces, I do not know if this shaves closer.

Nevertheless, a great shaver that I will continue to use.
