Amazon.co.uk Review
In their previous seven years' existence Sepultura had steadily established themselves as Brazil's premier metal outfit, but it wasn't until 1991's breakthrough album Arise that they truly captured the hearts and minds of the international rock mainstream. Subsequently re-released with the addition of four bonus tracks--including the band's monumental annihilation of Motorhead's "Orgasmatron"--Arise highlights Sepultura's irrefutable stylistic kinship to Metallica. The harmonic interplay between Max Cavalera's rock-solid rhythm work and Andreas Kisser's lead lines--on occasions the six stringed equivalent of a fully-throttled dentist's drill--is devastating. Max's tortured vocal, meanwhile, absolutely refuses to take prisoners while brother Igor's rhythmic battery is sheer, unfettered aggression. Moments of restraint, as on the quite astonishing "Altered State", merely accentuate the band's trademark brutality. Even with historical perspective, Arise retains its original ignominious appeal; an essential purchase. --Ian Fortnam

buy chaos ad instead
Ive only got 3 seps albums, this, chaos ad and roots. Roots is magic coz its raw, (if sometimes a bit simple) tribal metal, chaos AD, is very differnt, thrashy, but still has tribal sounds going on in it, enough to be noticed and not just seen as put in for the effect.
Arise, well i heard the title track a while ago, and its amazing. But the rest of the album, not as catchy, songs a bit too long, and dwindles in places, i guess its worth it for a seps fan as its 9 quid, but for someone just starting out get chaos AD!
Also u can kinda hear the reason why people compared em to slayer back then...
Not a bad album, but its sepultura they were legends, and did a lot better.
startling
this is a class prime thrash metal album with superb songs that have killer riffs and class songs throughout, this is a fine example of thrash metal at its fiercest and best, its a landmark album that hasnt aged a day and that is one of the highest compliments thats an album can ever get,the tribal influences that sepultura came to show on their album roots starts to develop on here, its a fast album at times and on other times it slows down and thrashs like a rhino in a tank, the drums are brilliant throughout and each of the four members play like gods throughout, this is a masterpiece
An important and impressive thrash album.
Back in 1991 the Brazilian thrash metal band, Sepultura brought out their fifth release, the aggressive masterpiece that is the album ‘Arise’. The release had the daunting position of following the 1989 inspired album ‘Beneath The Remains’, that proved Sepultura to me lords of thrash.
The album was released in a standard case and a limited edition digi-pak version. The album also spawned the release of the ‘Under Siege (Live at Barcelona) video and the singles:- Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Under Siege [Regnum Irae] and Third World Posse. In 1997, the album was remastered and released with four extra bonus tracks and on a gold CD.
The album is a solid block of aggressive speed thrash and power metal. The guitar work is tight and proficient, with tight crunching metal riffs backed up by a barrage of fast double bass work. Max Cavalera’s vocals are low and guttural, but still not undistinguishable. The album sports some of the band’s early tribal influences and incorporates a strong, industrial merge with the thrash sound. ‘Arise’ is an important milestone in the band’s career and a album that should be included in any respectable thrash collection. A truly awesome work of technically impressive metal.
