This is definitely the heaviest Kiss album since 1984's ANIMALIZE. Realising his film appearances and outside projects were detrimental to the band, Gene Simmons was focused and full of conviction on this record. Kiss picked producer Bob Ezrin, who helmed their best selling (DESTROYER) and worst selling (THE ELDER) albums. It was a wise choice, as REVENGE is sweet for a band that teetered off course for a few years.
"Unholy" is vintage Gene Simmons and was the first single. "Take It Off" is Paul Stanley's tribute to strip clubs, while "Spit" is an ode to voluptuous women around the globe. "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll To You II" is an excellent cover of the Argent tune that makes for a great concert anthem. "Every Time I Look At You" is a wonderfully melodic acoustic ballad complete with violins. The album's closer is "Carr Jam 1981", an instrumental written by drummer Eric Carr. Bob Ezrindiscovered the track in the vaults after Carr's death, and the piece was shortened in length so the drum solo became the featured section. Bruce Kulick's lead guitar was dubbed over Ace Frehley's, and the rest was left intact. It's a blazing track and a fitting homage to a talented musician.

good but?
don't get me wrong this is a good kiss album BUT! it really was a big change in sound and direction! i was a big fan of kiss in the 80's crazy nights is still my favourite kiss album, then i was 15 when it came out so i missed the early stage of the band with the make up and all that,so for me kiss in 80's rocked.so back to revenge i was a little surprissed when i first heard it because it was so different to what i was used to,it was a lot darker in mood to say lick it up or hot in the shade records so it took some getting used to but after a few listens i did start to enjoy it more and more so what do i know? have a listen for youself and see what i meen rock on!
The best Kiss album
This is the best album they have made in the last 20 years - bar none.
The best KISS album
this is my all time Favorte KISS album.
Yes I go back and listen to the early stuff and the mid eighties stuff like lick it up etc, but I always come back to this.
Without doubt, the heavest album they did (expect Carnival of souls, but that doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence) and the best.
BUY IT - you won't regret it.
Some absolute classic lyrics from Gene.
If only Domino had been recorded heavier, like it is on Alive III......
