Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Beginning with the title ballad that became his signature anthem, and concluding with "The Best is Yet to Come," this hit album captures Tony Bennett at the peak of his "pop"-ularity, in lush orchestral arrangements. This is Bennett the belter at his best, his big voice made to sound even more expansive with that hallmark early-'60s echo behind it. But the jazz vocalist in Bennett still knows how to find intimacy and delicacy even in broad settings like these--particularly in his tribute to the city by the bay. "Once Upon a Time" is an especially lovely ballad from a forgotten Broadway show, and for variety there's also a big-band Latin treatment of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and a few brassy up-tempo numbers ("Rules of the Road," "Taking a Chance on Love") that could gain Bennett an honorary membership in the Rat Pack. Well, he was Sinatra's favorite singer. --Jim Emerson

BENNETT AT HIS PEAK5
BENNETT RECORDED SEVERAL ALBUMS IN THE 1960'S THAT ELEVATED HIM ALONGSIDE SINATRA.THIS CD CONTAINS TWO OF THOSE ALBUMS GREAT SONGS SUNG AS THOUGH EACH ONE WAS A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE FOR HIM-I DON'T BELIEVE THAT HIS RECORDINGS HAVE REACHED THIS STANDARD SINCE (from 70's onwards)

The best value CD in the world?5
Personally, I think Tony Bennett shines live, late at night, and that his voice has actually got better over the years. However, BOTH of these studio albums are wonderful. There is real heart and soul in both of them and they are both FUN. The sound quality is practically perfect and the mood is so relaxing and elegant. What value!!!

Twice as cool !5
O.K.! What's going on? Why am I the first to write a review on this excellent coupling?! Fingers at the ready? Straight to checkout! Here's an offer you just can't refuse: Two "classic" (that word again!) albums married together on one glorious CD at a give away price; "I Left My Heart In San Fransisco" (yes Tony's theme song) from 1962 and "I Wanna Be Around" from '63. Now there are some poor misguided and misinformed people who think Tony Bennett is just one song but no, nO, NO ... here for example, is an excellent 24 track offering of great songs sung with style, class, depth, warmth and heart. Mr Sinatra's "Taking A Chance On Love" and "The Best Is Yet To Come", in my humble opinion, take the standard honours but Tony sees off all comers with "The Good Life" and "I Wanna Be Around" (competing with Frisco). There are gems to be found, none better or more satisfying than the classically set "Tender Is The Night" but then there's the swingin' "Rules Of The Road, up tempo, afore mentioned, "Taking A Chance On Love" and "The Best Is Yet To Come" (still great!), Country and Western meets Swing on "Candy Kisses" (a track so out of place it stands on it's own!), cool, laid back shuffle of "Until I Met You"; ballads aplenty "Once Upon A Time", Chaplin's "Smile", "Have I Told You Lately", "Marry Young" "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" (opening line "Why have I always been a failure ..." get outa her Tony!), "If I Love Again" ...oh see Amazon's album info! What can I say ..63 minutes of pure class; showing it's age in places perhaps but who wouldn't after nearly 40 years! If you're like me, dates in music don't matter; if it's good it's good and nothing changes that fact! Is this good? No, it's great! I commend to you Mr Anthony Dominick Benedetto who courtecy of Messrs Douglas Cross and George Cory left his heart in San Fransisco but must have gone back for it 'cause you can't sing like this without a huge heart! Check out! Now!
