Art Theatre Pop
Karnak are the inheritors of the avante-garde 'vanguarda' scene in Sao Paulo created by the likes of Itamar Assumpção, Vange Milliet and Baiano Tom Ze who lives in Pompeia in Sao Paulo. Paulistano Vanguarda music is as theatrical as it is musical - with a strong sense of performance within the context of the music itself even when released as a CD, a high level of technical complexity, a use of rock forms alongside Brazilian rhythms and a variety of voices in a variety of languages and characters....
You can almost feel the curtains being drawn on some vast gothic stage when the first thundering track (in Russian) explodes into a complex of soaring guitars, counterpoint vocals and effortless syncopation. It's a rush from there on... through Alma Nao Tem Cor - a witty attack on racism - Conversa dos Nenes - an interlude of conversing babies and the tongue in cheek mock-African-Italian anthem with a spy-film brass interlude - Hymboraewqueyra....
If you like this be sure to check out Itamar, Vange Milliet, Tete Espindola (whose from Mato Grosso), Zeca Baleiro's Petchopmundocao and Tom Ze's musico-theatrical studies of Samba and Pagode...
And try to see Karnak live - they are incredible and feature a jack russel on backing vocals....
Original and Excellent
Karnak is an avant-guarde band that borrows stuff from everywhere on earth. The result is not a confused mix _ it sounds really natural and, above all, fun and exciting. These guys knows their music and know what they're doing. Addictive.
Weird but fun
I heard this music at the carnevale in Brazil and it was difficult to get hold of there. It is a bunch of rock versions of classical, opera, and traditional African, Asian and South American music. Sounds awful but is great fun, and sounds just as good in your sitting room as in a mad tropical night in Brazil
