Customer Reviews
raw rage against the machine, but excellent none the less!!!
bought this album from ebay about a year ago, been listening to it since, I'm still blown away by it sometimes
amazing lp, i prefer this album to Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium, its just sounds more raw, which is what i like
all in all, 4 out of 5, look at for bombtrack and without a face which are really good
oh and like the previous reviewer noticed the lyrics in the booklet are written by someone with a hearing problem!!!
Live & Rare
The title says it all really - it is live and it is rare (took me so long to find it, i really should have looked here). Its a little different from the other live performances in that it doesnt give you a list of Rage's best tracks, and instead provides rage's most political songs to date, a few with some spoken word by zack about the inspiration etc. It also has some totally new tracks, making it an essential buy for most rage fans. (First time iv ever heard "Zapata's Blood" all the way through) One of the main reasons i like this album, though, is the presence of 1 song - darkness, a moving song (for me) about the Apartheid in South Africa. NOTE: the version iv got seems to have had the lyrics written by someone with a hearing deficiancy, as most of the previously unrealeased songs have got words wrong (e.g. Zack: "...They became known as the Zapatista movement..." Person Writing Lyrics Insert: "...They became known as the Suffer peace Movement..." What rubbish. Thats the only problem with the album.
RATM... Mechanisation in a Western Democratic?? State
Finally, I get my hands on this album, after having many, this is the one I was striving for!! Why? Because this very band seems to be one of a dying breed that are able to stick to an opinion, not to mention make damn fine music, even though this opinion is based on something that can only be called 'Political Angst' or rage....... if you like!! However, there personal agenda's aside, this early album of RATM containing live & Limited material is well worth it's asking price. Being a drummer my self, I can say that the drum licks laid down by Mr Brad Wilk, although maybe at times a little technically basic, are as sweet as a vanilla frosted donought, with cream on top, + the cherry. Thats if you like donoughts, and this is the thing with Mr Bob & Mr Morello, you either like the tunes they make or you don't, but like a donought, you can't say that it ain't sweet, so if there is one thing you are gonna think about the guitar, bass and drums, it's that it is catchy as hell, and that is what makes it so sweet.
As for Mr De La Rocha, you may find his political ambience slightly beweildering at times, but the way he sings, raps shouts and parades his voice is just another addition as to why the band makes some fine music.
So the final question is why only 4 stars???? Well firstly most of the tracks are live, so they have a mistake here and there, as all live tracks from all bands do, hey, nobody's perfect, But secondly, the band has not reached their full fluidity on stage yet(as this is only their third official album), their influential status is not at it's maximum at this stage in the bands career, and it is this mass influence which makes RATM...... Rage against the machine, their legend type status awaits them in future years, so for the moment they get an amasing 4 stars actually, more like a 4 and a half!!
