Product Description

On their debut MAYBE YOU'VE BEEN BRAINWASHED TOO, New Radicals meld sweeping hooks with aggressive harmonies and large dollops of stream-of-consciousness soul. Wunderkid Gregg Alexander is essentially New Radicals, with a voice that bounces between Karl Wallinger's husky rasp and Billy Corgan's nasal whine. His songs go by such odd monikers as "Jehovah MadeThis Whole Joint For You" and "Crying Like a Church On Monday". Having grown up with parents who switched religions like most people changed channels, it's no accident that Alexander avoids using heavy-handed didactic aphorisms to get his point across. Instead, his songwriting ranges from a tilt towards life's great mysteries (Amelia Earhardt's disappearance and the existence of Atlantis on "Someday We'll Know") to extolling the virtues of individualism in the face of media overload (the title track).
Throughout, New Radicals playwith an exuberance reminiscent of Style Council's breezier moments ("Mother We Just Can't Get Enough") and the blue-eyed soulful side of Todd Rundgren ("In Need Of A Miracle".) Actress-cum-musician Danielle Brisebois contributes backgroundvocals and piano and stands out particularly on the melancholy "I Don't Wanna Die Anymore".

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Veteran singer/songwriter/producer Gregg Alexander found the perfect formula for catchy, disposable pop songs with the inordinately hooky single "You Get What You Give", which owes more than a little to World Party. It's a pity, then, that the rest of the album doesn't live up to the promise of the one song--but then, it's somewhat fitting for an album from a 'band' that never consisted of anyone other than Alexander. Not too long after the album came out, he retired the name to concentrate on producing others. --Bucky Wunderlick

I can't believe they disbanded5
Siply the best album I have bought. I play it every week (at least), love every track and wish it was possible for them to reform and produce more.

Some clarity5
After reading a semi negative view from Amazon I feel incensed to write some kind of defence, my first review though i listen to a lot of music.. I first heard this album when visiting the states and my brother had it, four years later i still play it, its the first album in my car CD collection, and in fact despite CD's being sold as indestructible, something we have all come to realise is a slight fabrication..!! I have problems with two of the tracks and came onto Amazon to look at purchasing a replacement.. Now, i have to say.. I have never before had to replace a CD, so I'm still not tired of these haunting melodies and the depth buried in the lyrics.. This album is probably my all time favourite album, i never tire of it.. thing is, neither does my wife, and nor do my children (15 and 13)
There's a message in every song, not always there to tell you what to do, but to tell you how frustrated or elated or a myriad of other human emotions, experienced by the writer.
Don't expect to love it from the first second, you wont hate it, some of it you wont understand, but you will grow to love it.

Pure Brilliance5
I think my review title explains it all.

From the ivory tinkling to the uplifting, this album has it all. If you like good music, buy this!
