Much like the overcast and murky weather that Seattle is known for, Alice In Chains' music is dour, plumbing the darkerside of life that's cluttered with dashed hopes and inner turmoil. The group's self-titled third album continues along this path, peppered by Layne Staley's nihilistic lyrics and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's weighty playing. The three-leggeddog on the cover guarantees that no warm and fuzzy feelingswill get aroused.
When Staley states "How proud are you being able/To gather faith from fable?" on "God Am", he reflects the feelings of the displaced generation AIC sing to. Elsewhere, imagery of drug addiction floats through "Sludge Factory", as Cantrell's plodding riffs and the sound of a disjointed conversation paint an aural picture of nodding out. The darkened hues colouring the sound of ALICE IN CHAINS make it a perfect rainy-day record.

amazing! but hard to listen to at first
A lot of people overlook AIC's music because they hear it once and think it sounds like a depressing racket and don't seem to see just how incredibly beautiful some of the harmonies and melodies are. I love the darkness that this album has and there's something almost hypnotic about it (probably all the drug influences) that somehow compells you to listen to it all over again. Album highlights for me are Grind, Sludge Factory, Heaven beside you and Frogs, but almost every song is excellent. In my opinion, this is second best only to Jar of flies.
dark...very dark
after having 'Facelift', 'Dirt' and their 'Live' album for some time i decided to purchase 'Alice in Chains', their third album. To me it is one of those albums that are so dark and drenched in emotion that u totally feel what the band was like at the time of this recording. Staley was of course seriously deep into addiction and i think this truly reflects on the feeling of the songs. 'Again', 'Shame In You' and 'Over Now' are my favourites, the latter being a truly depressing yet strangely uplifting song. I recommend you buy it after you buy their first two albums 'Facelift' and the beautifully dark 'Dirt'...this album is very very dark but beautiful at the same time. Alice in Chains fooking rock!
disappointing
with their best work behind them and laynes drug problems getting worse they recorded this album and it sounds very messy.
the songs just ooze a sludgy and droney style...there is little to no pace about this album and it drags you kicking and screaming through the mud.
personally like it but the downside is the songs just arent very good. yeah sure there are some very good highlights like "heaven beside you" and "brush away" and "again" and "grind".....but the rest of the album sort of blends into one long dull song.
maybe that is the main problem, alot of the songs are too long for their own good and also a bit odd. "sludge factory" starts off well enough but it just doesnt ever seem to end,the same is true of the just downright wierd "frogs?"
it feels like a very arty album and as such lost me about halfway through.
also its very weak in comparison to "dirt" and the songs on this album sound alot better when they are stripped down on the MTV unplugged album that would follow this one.
a shame that this is how the best of all the grunge bands had to bow out.
