Average customer review:Product Description
A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)", are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom.
BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deepsense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown", a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness from the world. Both joy and grief are explored on this album with equal tenacity.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Carey's first post-divorce effort makes passing allusions to her ex-hubby (and label honcho) Tommy Mottola, but it doesn't dwell on them the way many similar projects do. Instead, Carey is right back to her old tricks; cooing trademark melismatic spirals through sexy, beat-heavy hits. Fans will dig the bedroom slink of "Baby Doll", the dripping "Honey" and the infectious title track (reprised, along with a bit of Elton John's "Skyline Pigeon", in "Fly Away"). The highlight is a duet with Dru Hill on Prince's "The Beautiful Ones", which just might be her most pointed commentary on Mottola. --Michael Ruby

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10
Fresh in 1997, still fresh in 2008. 11 years on, this sounds perfect. "The Beautiful ones" is a cover of a 13 year old song by Prince, and the reason it has got a higher mark is that Dru Hill and Mariah Carey go much better than a Prince falsetto. No honestly! Fresh from her new-found independance, she started dressing skimpier!
brillant album, still sounds great in 2008
