challenging screamcore
this is poison the wells debut album and is seven years old now,but retains all of its anger, melody and purpose. Its an album that has as much emotion as any album you are likely to hear and at 28 minutes long is extremely focused and is all killer.
The album opens with the jawbreaking classic 12/23/93 and in those 3 minutes you get a prime example of what the band are about, spine breaking brutality with fearless melodies and sing a long chorus',maybe thats standard practice now and maybe even then but this is more than run of the mill music.
Slice paper wrists is the most memorable track of them all i would say as it is impossible not to love this song from the first listen,a million bands have been inspired by this grounbreaking album and i will leave it up to you to decide if they bettered it,i will say that the production isnt the strongest here but thats only a small gripe, nerdy is a heavy song that again will leave you in a shivering mess, the album closes with my mirror no longer reflects which is chaotic and builds into a crescendo of brutal riffing insanity, all in all an album you shouldnt ignore for much longer.
Different
PTW, what can you say about them? you could say that they're are one of the best bands of their genre but that wouldn't be enough, PTW blend anger, depression and so much beauty into their music, their songs basically bleed emotion, what PTW do the best is in their originality, forget about song structure this band want you to be suprised, screaming, melodic singing they do it all, and damn well.
This album in my opinion is their best, it's classic stuff from beginning to end, the opening track "12-23-93" sets the album up perfectly, simple guitars to even the most complexed riffs leading into a great chorus, and that's what you're going to get through the album.
Honourable mentions are the songs "Artists Rendering Of Me", "Slice Paper Wrists", "Nerdy", and the best PTW song in my opinion "My Mirror No Longer Reflects", an outstanding song, with a great guitar riff at the end of the song.
One of the true greats
You know that shudder you get when you hear an amazing riff or hook? Well, that's the feeling you get ALL THE WAY THROUGH 'Opposite of December'. Poison the well are the cream of the Florida-style hardcore bands (keepsake, evergreen terrace, skycamefalling) and this album is their crowning moment. Combining melody and aggression long before it became cliché, these guys created one of the greatest modern Hardcore albums of all time. It's dark, morbid, and sorrowful yet at the same time beautiful and stunning. One second their all churning riffs with shredding vocals, next its all harmonious and sad, then suddenly fast thrashing and squealing leads. The slight outbursts of melody and spoken word only go to make the heavier parts heavier and the give album and eerie, ethereal sound. This is definitely music that taps into something emotional and, dare I say, spiritual.
Every song on this cd is pure quality. The best are 'nerdy' 'slice paper writs' and 'my mirror no longer reflects' (which has the coolest outro I've ever heard) and of course 'artists rendering of me' .
I've had this album for ages, and while every man and their dog is ripping the whole melodic/heavy beauty/beast sound this album still rules 'em all. If you're a fan of hardcore or aggressive music in general your life will not be complete until you have this...
