Amazon.co.uk Review
The splicing together of nu-metal, rap, funk and sterile electronica, laced with dark melodies as infectious as anything Britney or Steps have to offer, sold 6 million copies of Limp Bizkit's previous album, Significant Other. It also saw them invade mainstream America and more impressively, their doom-fuelled rework of the Mission Impossible theme, "Take A Look Around", score a number 3 hit this side of the pond. With Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water, they perfect the formula. From the electro of "Intro", through the contagious chug of "My Generation" to the straight-up, non-metal rap of "Getcha Groove On", Chocolate Starfish is a slick, clinical and flawless platform for Fred Durst's effortlessly savage, and occasionally--if unintentionally--comic sociological rants for disaffected youth. Ultimately, though, it's that undeniably intelligent musical backdrop--the brooding guitar sound that gave the Mission Impossible 2 theme haunting new life and menace, and defines "Hot Dog", "Full Nelson", "My Way", "Rollin'", "Boiler" and "It'll Be Okay"--that makes Chocolate Starfish a seething work of genius. Fact is, with rap and rock saying pretty much the same thing, Limp Bizkit are not alone in what they do. They just do it better than everyone else. --Dan Gennoe

Takes Me Back To The Old Days
This is a brilliant album. Truth be told I never properly listened to the album fully, was always mesmerised by the big tracks, being Rollin', My Generation, My Way, Boiler, Take A Look Around, and by the time I'd over-used them I was on to another album, a Blink 182 or The Offspring album. So I missed a full album of good songs, bar 2 songs, Livin' It Up and Hold On(plus the Intro and Outro, but they don't really count). This is the sort of music I miss, the sort of music that got me into Rock music(I think Rollin' was one of the first rock songs I heard on the radio before I delved into the "rock scene"). I left the "rock scene" as soon as bands like Bullet For My Valentine came about. I never even listened to a song of theirs, I just didn't like that goth sort of look(was the only comparison I could give back then). This was one of the albums I listened to repeatedly while in the music wilderness before i moved over to Hip-Hop, but I can still listen to this album and rock out, it's still in my heart to enjoy it, and may it stay that way forever.
You will want more!!!
When I listen to some of the rubbish that is coming out of bands these days, it is no wonder that I resort to the great sound of Limp Bizkit. The band produces a mixture of sounds and i'm sure that there is a track on this album for every listener.
The sing along lyrics for tracks such as 'Rollin'', 'My Way', Take a Look Around' and 'Boiler' mean that you will remeber this album for the lyrics but you will also remeber it for the great guitar bass and drumming. The sound in 'My Generation' is some of the best that I have heard from a track. The start of the track involves a small solo beat from John Otto; whilst it not being the fastest beat out there, it hold the same beat through out the track. After this, the guitar, bass and Dj Lethal come in to make an amazing 'moshable' sound.
Another great song is 'My Way'. The limited lyrics usually critisised by critics are not in this song unlike some like 'Rollin'. The song also uses a clean sound that isn't heavy but is still quality. The turntableing of Dj Lethal also splits the song up perfectlly.
One problem but not worth taking a star off
Ok i'll just get straight to the point...the instrumental side of this record is great!
Wes isn't the most technical guitarist out there...in fact hes far from it, but these days too many people are looking for speedy riffs and forget about creativity and simply using a guitar to better a track as opposed to taking over it with satriani like solos.
Otto is a great drummer he adds to wes's melody perfectly as dose Mr Rivers with his responsive bass lines that he manages to weave into wes's guitar doodles...I'd say lethals job is to put the 'icing on the cake'...or the limp on the bizkit..ehem.
Ok so heres the touchy part,
i love the tone of Freds singing voice dont get me wrong although i was a little disappointed to find out that the majority of the vocals on the track 'hold on' were actually sung by Scott Weiland but other than that i think Dursts vocal performance on the album is great! HOWEVER...it's let down drastically by his lyrics (not in all tracks) I'm mostly talking about the first track on the record 'Hot dog'. This really took the biscuit...the melodies Wes manages to hook up on this track are awesome! In fact the whole instrumental track is astounding BUT then we have fred attempting to offend Trent Reznor?
it came as a surprise when it hit the chorus on first listen as the verse lyrics have nothing to do with Trent and actually make some sense.
this really messed the track up and it's just a real shame i guess.
Other than that i love the sound and production of this record...lethal adds nice little touches to the end of certain tracks with short outro's that usually sound very trip hop orientated... very relaxing. It's a shame some of them arnt a longer.
I'd say its worth the cash especially as its going for around £2 on here these days since the band totally slipped out of the mainstream...or even the universe?
