Amazon.co.uk Review
"What is wrong with the world today?" bellows frontman Coby Dick on Infest, Papa Roach's opening statement of intent. "The government, the media, or your family?" Welcome to the post-Millennial American rockscape, where every teen has his cross to bear and every band approaches the recording of an album with a whole head of demons to exorcise. And welcome, Papa Roach--not a band that comes to lay waste, more a band that studies the emotionally devastated fall-out once everything's been wasted. Infest is an album very much in the mould of Limp Bizkit's Significant Other--muscular, bruising rap-metal, dysfunctional two-fingers-to-the-world attitude--but where Limp Bizkit's anger manifests in Fred Durst's crotch-clutching braggadio, Papa Roach wear their issues with a sense of empathy. The likes of "Revenge" and "Broken Home" ("I know my mother loves me/ But does my father even care?") are pretty self-explanatory, but on "Last Resort"--a brutally simplistic study of a friend's suicide attempt--Papa Roach's brevity is their undeniable strength. Tell the parents--here's a rock band of positive male role-models, ready to bang the world to rights. --Louis Pattison
Customer Reviews
Absolute masterpiece.
I first bought this album when it came out in 2000. Since then it has easily been my favourite album, despite my musical tastes changing constantly since then. Words can't describe how near perfection this album is. The lyrics are not what I pay attention to, but I do like them. Being a guitarist, Jerry Horton's musical prowess on this album just made me awestruck when I first heard it. He doesn't show off with technical skill, but all of the music blends together perfectly and his riffing is the work of genius.
I might be the only one who thinks that way, but there's nothing I like more than to play along with the entire album start to finish.
A must buy. This album is fantastic, and what Papa Roach really is, as opposed to their later albums.
Call in the exterminators...
"My name's Coby Dick / Mr Dick if you're nasty / Rock a mic with a voice that's raspy / 'cause I'm poetic in my operations / My God-given talent is to rock all the nations."
It starts like this...
...And it doesn't get any better...
`Last Resort', `Between Angels and Insects', `Blood Brothers' and any other track are limited, full on (with no effect) and weak. `Revenge' has a decent chorus; `Never Enough' is harmless and easily bearable in comparison to others. But what's with `Thrown Away'? Reggae?! It's like walking in on a jamming session with UB40 and Dub War.
A brownie point goes to them for sticking to the things they can pull off easier when live (lack of samples) and rubbing this fact in your face with the live version of `Dead Cell' that is on the limited edition release. However, the main bulk of `Infest' is Iron Maiden backing, minus the solos and harmonies and topped with grating rap/sung vocals... and not forgetting those infuriating whispered bits that push that same nerves Celine Dion does - i.e. the one to grit teeth.
Bruce Dickinson should sue...
greeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaattttt
