Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Gramercy Park is an ambitious showcase for Dutch pianist Borstlap. Disc 1 is entirely solo piano and taken from a variety of dates on both sides of the Atlantic, including one at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw (main hall, of course). Unsurprisingly, Borstlap's interest in the romantic tradition of classical music emerges on this disc (there is a Chopin scherzo included, as well as "Dolphin Dance"). Disc 2 features Borstlap in a jazz trio setting. The personnel changes from track to track, as again do the locations, this time from New York to Amsterdam to Bombay. Among those featured are Jeff "Tain" Watts and Essiet Essiet. In this setting Borstlap shows himself an adept student of people like Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. Disc 3 finds him in Herbie Hancock soul-dance territory as well as the type of groove that promises to out-Wesseltoft Bugge. One could go the whole hog and call the triptych "Chameleon", but that would be perhaps a little too obvious. Still, this is a pretty versatile collection, ideal for solitary evenings by the fire (disc 1), intimate dinner-party evenings (disc 2) or recherché dance sessions at your local hop (disc 3). --Keith Shadwick
