Stand up set, if not stand out
Not seen amidst the title should be "as represented by Jazzanova and the artists from Compost Records" seeing as how that comprises seven of the ten tracks included here. Perfectly fine, considering the quality of material mentioned, but a bit shallow casting call nonetheless.
Mixing jazz drums, Brazillian beats and bossa nova touches - a soft voice or instrumental solo stirred in occasionally - can indeed carry a theme when the dance sensibility remains this resolute. The pieces here dally with cocktail prettiness on occasion, but pack too much bottom-line liveliness to remain wallflowers. Rainer Truby Trio's storming sensation "Galicia" highlights the album, while Balanco and Jazzanova team up for smooth nu-jazz gliding. DJ Matsuoka's funky big band noir "The Will of Life" further offers an alternate perspective seemingly plucked out of a too-hip club.
On the downside, surely no wanted another revision of the James Bond Theme (Les Grammas) whichhas the misfortune of appearing first. And even though Ian Pooley himself touts the remix of "What's Your Number", color me unimpressed. Ah well, small complaints for a set that doesn't quite standout but certainly makes you stand up.
