21st Century Dub
Recently featured on a Mr. Scruff mix, Mungo's HiFi is a textbook example of modern Dub, and these guys are good. Rhythmically, this is a rockingly good dub album with skankin' bass lines underpinning every tune. There are a few dub and vocal versions of the same tune in true King Tubby style..the versions are different enough to warrant inclusion, without risking the accusation of "filler". The conscious lyrics are a refreshing change from a lot of sexist stuff coming out of Jamamica these days. Wickedness is a particularly good vocal version...but the true jewel in the the crown is 'Ing' . This is a masterwork of driving bass, infectious groove, and lyrical invention. All the lines (written and sung by the great Brother Culture) end in the letters i-n-g. This is fantastically entertaining stuff...you wonder where he will take you next..."Einstein was famous for 'is tinkin'/ Shakespeare did a lot of playwritin" til we get to the best post 9/11 lyric I know. "terror from the sky early in the mornin'/ bring down the two World Trade buildin'/all over the world people start panickin'/ on TV I was watchin"
Get if fer da groove n ting.
Where it's at
Funky, innovative and really good to see. Gives you hope that out there are people making music that matters. A fantastic summer antidote to bland boy band nonsense and chart rubbish. Everyone should have this album for chilling in the park, bouncing round the house and recovering on a sunday morning. Music with a message without being patronising or sanctimonious.
