Face Value5
The Roots: Face Value
Phrenology is the Roots greatest album of there now increasingly publicised career. With Phrenology the Roots have allowed their definitive style to impact on other genres, the most effective tracks ‘Break you Off’-featuring the talents of Musiq (Soulchild) and ‘The Seed’ featuring Cody Chesnutt the two most radio attractive tunes of the 14 track album.
Although some of the songs drag on a little (water-10minutes) each song shows The Roots unmistakable style and there treatment of music regardless of genre.
The album attempts to chronicle music since its introduction, and the way in which it may be perceived in the future, The Roots again going against tradition and in some respects condemning how hip-hop albums are nowadays produced, The Roots providing not only a musical journey but a message or musical movement.
Also featuring the vocals of Nelly Furtado (Sacrifice), Talib Kweli (Rolling with Heat) and Jill Scott (Complexity) the album crosses genres and includes a truly eclectic mix of artists and sounds.
The Roots sound is hard to define due to the eclectic mix evident in their distinctive style of music and for this reason Phrenology could enter the collection of many lovers of urban music, (and should) and with Phrenology the Roots should finally receive the attention so deserved of their innovative music.

Just good music...5
This is a special album. The Roots are the best musicians in hip hop as anyone who's seen the live shows will agree with and on this studio album, more than any other, they demonstrate this.
The album contains perhaps the best and most splendid anthem of the last year or two "water" alongside the wierdest most experimental mood music. In fact this a more mature offering, containing some of the most digestible straight up (blinding) hip hop but also showing that they're true musicians who are probably getting bored of being just a hiphop band. You should shelve your preconceptions and just listen to this, you will be surprised!
Basically, as a hiphop fan you gotta have those 4 supaphat tracks, as a music fan you gotta have the album...
