Amazon.co.uk Review
VH-1's Behind the Music may signify the final curtain for some acts, but Do It for Love shows that Hall and Oates aren't so easily confined to the dustbins of pop history. With a chart run that spanned most of the 1970s and 80s, Philadelphia's most enduring purveyors of blue-eyed soul went on to keep a fairly low profile until "Do It for Love", a newly recorded track for their 2002 VH-1 retrospective, resurrected their careers. Nearly a year later, the duo reprises the track and title on a full album that aims to recapture the best aspects of their glory days.
Among the highlights on Do It for Love is a sublime cover of New Radical's "Someday We'll Know" that teams them up with War Babies collaborator Todd Rundgren. There's also the funky "Miss DJ", a playful pop confection that avoids the excessive novelty of their more calculated 80s hits. After three decades, Hall still has one of pop's most expressive voices. And while the album as a whole may lack the edge and energy of the pair's earliest work, it's still a promising collection from a duo that's earned a place in Philly soul history. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews
Excellent return album from Hall & Oates!
This is an impressive return album from Hall & Oates: 14 excellent songs, wonderfully performed in their trademark style. Gorgeous vocals, harmonies and catchy pop songs to make you smile!
Whilst there are perhaps no songs on here that match the quality of some of their very best from decades ago - "Maneater" is my personal favourite - it is also true to say that, as an album, "Do It For Love" is stronger than many previous Hall & Oates albums on which, even in the days when albums were much shorter, there were some poor songs. There is no "filler" material on "Do It For Love" - it is an excellent album and, who knows, perhaps after a few more listens I may even change my mind about these songs rivalling their established "hits" like "Maneater".
If you have ever enjoyed Hall & Oates's music then I can recommend this without hesitation - it is highly enjoyable.
If you haven't tried them yet then this would be a good place to start!
simply wonderful
Everybody out there: give a chance to this album! all the songs are fantastic, this is pure soul music made by two great musicians.
I can't stop listening to it! Recommended
Do It For Love ... Go Out & Buy This !!
I was a massive fan of Hall & Oates in the 80's, when I was a teenager, and had a huge crush on Daryl Hall! The first concert I was lucky enough to go to was one of theirs, in Birmingham, England, and they blew me away! In the ensuing years I somehow lost touch with what they were doing as I got into more different bands and singers. Then, a few months ago, I was browsing in a record store and came across this CD at a criminally low price and bought it immediately, knowing that there was no way Hall & Oates could put out a bad album. I was proved right ... and in spades! This album is GORGEOUS and their melodies and vocals are as impeccable as ever. Both have amazing voices but, for me, Daryl Hall has always had the edge with his silky, sexy voice and, judging from the photo on the back of the CD sleeve, he still is as sexy as ever! Every song on this album is a winner, but standout tracks are Man on a Mission, Do It For Love, Someday We'll Know, Forever For You, Intuition and Love In A Dangerous Time, but it's hard to pick a favourite because they're all so good! For anyone who is, or ever was, a fan of Hall & Oates you should definitely add this to your collection, and for anyone who is new to them and doesn't know their music, this album would be a great place to start as it is classic Hall & Oates but still sounds fresh enough to compete with any current music and it stands head and shoulders above a lot of music by other singers such as Robbie Williams, et al. These guys have vocal talent he could only dream of having! Since buying this album, I have now decided to get several more of their albums on CD from Amazon as I have every album they did in the 80s on vinyl, which I haven't listened to in years, so now I can listen to all their older music again, as well as adding some of their newer music.
