Amazon.co.uk Review
Although Cibelle is her debut, Brazilian singer Cibelle (pronounced "see-bell-ee") has already made a name for herself with standout appearances on Suba's landmark São Paolo Confessions and Otto's criminally overlooked Condom Black. This self-titled effort is cut from the same cloth with help from noted producer Apollo 9 and the sonic architects from Morcheeba. But even with this support, the chanteuse's sultry sing-song voice (think Bebel Gilberto and Astrid Gilberto) is rightly pushed to the fore, allowing her rich vocal nuances to shine through regardless of whether she is singing in Portuguese or English. She also immerses herself in the production and writing here, writing or co-writing nearly all the music using an even mix of live instrumentation and textured programming backdrops. Highlights include the loose and funky "No Prego"" the gentle ballad "I'll Be" and the nearly traditional samba "Só Sei Viver No Samba". This is a promising first step from a talented up-and-comer. --Tad Hendrickson

Cool sounds from Brasil - A Summer Treat
Please beware! As good and charming as this album is, it is not another Tanto Tempo. The comparisons with Bebel Gilberto may hold some water vocally, but musically this whole album is closer to Smoke City's "Heroes of Nature", as an eclectic mix of sounds from modern Brasil. If you want something that has Tanto Tempo's wondrously laid back feel, try the very classy album "Natural" by Celso Fonseca which is also from the Ziriguiboom/Crammed Discs stable.
Cibelle by all accounts comes from the same circle of Musicians/Artists/Engineers as Celso, Bebel, Katia B and Suba who have produced some of the most stunnning and remarkable albums of Brasilian Music in recent years, and she hasn't failed to keep up with them.
"Cibelle" is a cool, summery collection of music of many differing styles, but manages to to remain cohesive and flowing. Great production and full and quirky arrangements means there is much of interest to the ears. Added to her undeniably sultry voice, it's a great UK/European debut.
In the wave of Bebel Gilberto...
Cibelle is a wonderful fresh new composer/lyricist/singer signed by belgian label Ziriguiboom, and as such offers a new perspective of the current renewal of Bossa Nova. Less electronic/groovy than Bebel, but as eclectic re her influences, she litterally purrs into your ears both in english and portuguese. In the traditional brazilian fashion she has collaborated with other artists such as Celso Fonseca (on 'Natural' she sings 'Ela e carioca') This album is beautiful, melodic, fresh, graceful, and already shows the maturity of this artist. (Saw her sing in a jazz club in London with Celso, she is great on stage too!!!) Don't miss this CD!!!
