Product Description

Debut album from Montreal indie rockers who have drawn comparisons with bands like Interpol and The Walkmen. Like thosebands, they are inspired by 80s Brit post-punk acts such asJoy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure and The Smiths, but also feature a warm, chunky modern rock sound and classy pop songwriting. The album includes the single 'Lola StarsAnd Stripes' and 'Still In Love Song' from their 'Rememberese' EP.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Although the clipped chimes of Greg Paquet's guitars beg justifiable comparisons to Interpol, Logic Will Break Your Heart defies lazily bandied similarities to the Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen. Montreal's the Stills may sound glum and painfully introspective but vocalist Tim Fletcher speaks softly while carrying an admirably large literate stick, the band wrapping up his eloquently expressed worldly disgust in the sort of thrilling, glossily ostentatious rock panoramas that are anathema to the cheapskate production values of today's alt-rock proletariat. Beneath the polish lies plenty of spit--"Gender Bombs" and "Love and Death" ratchet up the thrills with repeated listens. Time and concentration spent with Logic Will Break Your Heart will deliver rich dividends. --Kevin Maidment

And they don't even dress all in black...5
In order to guarantee commercial success, the record company presented The Stills with a checklist of things they had to include on this album before they were allowed to record; jangly guitars (check), sweeping basslines (check), brooding vocals (check) and a penchant for the bleak (let's see, 'Changes Are No Good', 'Love & Death'... check!) Well, it didn't give them any commercial success but they certainly made one hell of an album, because The Stills took it upon themselves to include a final bulletpoint to the list; good songwritting (check, check and check again).

Forget the comparisons to Interpol (who I love nearly as much) because The Stills can stand up for themselves, without having to credit a more popular band just for point of reference; for a start vocalist Tim Fletcher imbues far emotion into his singing that Paul Banks (now I wont mention them again, promise).

'Logic Will Break Your Heart' is the sort of album where every song is strong and individual. Highlights include 'Lola Stars And Stripes', kick starting the album with an upbeat, chiming riff that rings like a fire alarm made by Fender. 'Changes Are No Good' is a driving track that benefits from some carefully placed feedback and an anthemic chorus that, considering the subject matter, really shouldn't be. 'Let's Roll' displays The Stills talent for setting a bleak, paranoid lyric to a wonderfully singable melody. It hides a heart-warming message ("But I'm not affraid / As long as you're here with me") inside a paranoid lyric ("Don't be affraid / Of the roaming alligators / And save the heart attacks for later") inside a heart-warming melody. 'Animals And Insects' is very laid back and sounds like it was recorded after the band had been awake for 36 hours, or maybe they were just conserving energy for the thundering 'Still In Love Song' which is a storming 3'40'' pop song that could make a sweaty dancefloor full of indie boys and girls forget The Killers ever existed with just one bar of thumping bass.

This album is one of those that grabs your attention and demands that you listen to it. It's absorbing and rich in lyrical and musical quality, with moments of warmth and moments of stone cold issolation. 'Logic Will Break Your Heart' is an album to get lost in and is one that perhaps you learn to love over time; its not difficult though and after two or three listens you will be hooked. I cannot reccommend it enough.

love it5
what a debut ! ignore the bad review . no disrespect but can only express my feelings about a band that even a year or so after first hearing this album for me have the potential to be one of the best bands in the world! cant wait for the next album.

Black, yet a bright long-production debut5
The Stills managed to deliver black yet bright music on this bold and ravishing album, with intelligent and insightful lyrics ("Changes..., "Gender Bombs"). The outstanding performance and blending of the rhythm section, with fantastic bass lines ("Still in Love Song", an updated version originally released in the Rememberese EP) keeps a good balance with the marvellous guitar riffs and progressions of the likes of "Changes are no Good" and "Love and Death" which are reminiscent of Echo and the Bunnymen, The Devlins, and James' Whiplash cinematic atmospheres. This band is as good as Interpol and Longwave, with a more balanced production on the debut album. Such a band will likely deliver an even better second installment.
