Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
This enormous live box set is a necessity for the hardcore Metallifan, though casual fans (if Metallica has any casual fans) might be scared off. It contains material up to and including the self-titled "black" album, including concert favorites "Creeping Death" and "Seek & Destroy," as well as classics like "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," and "Fade to Black." There are also a couple of ripping-fast solos from Jason Newsted and Kirk Hammett, and covers of "Last Caress," "Am I Evil?" and "Stone Cold Crazy." The videos are from a 1992 San Diego concert and a 1989 stop on the Damaged Justice tour in Seattle; both are guaranteed to turn any fan who hasn't had the considerable pleasure of hearing this seminal metal band live green with envy. Pricey, but very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews

SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!! 2 x Region 2 Dvds / 3 x CDs - Buy, Beg, Borrow, Whatever It Takes...5
Well maybe it's only available Second Hand from Amazon UK these days or you might just drop lucky in your local HMV but whatever, this triple CD/2 x DVD (REGION 2!)FULLY LIVE, OFFICIAL boxset needs to be in any Metallicats collection!
The 3 x CDs are from Feb/Mar 1993, Mexico City.
The 2 x DVDs are from Seattle, August 1989 & San Diego, January 1992.
The Audio/Visual quality is fabulous & the DVDs are a good chance to see the lads when they still looked a thrash metal band (James with the long hair & the earrings, Jason with that kind of mullet look, the black armbands etc). Both US concerts are REALLY professionally filmed (unlike those awlful bootlegs out there!) Full Arena/Stadium shows too!
The CDs are outstanding too, clear as hell & as heavy as lead! How a live album should sound! All of the Kill 'Em All & And Justice For All material sounds MUCH, MUCH better live - obviously, the bass is much louder than on AJFA & Jason showcases 3 x amazing bass solos on both DVDs & the CDs. What a talent! Kirk has his moments of self indulgence & even James gets behind the drumkit at one of the US gigs!
Highlights from the CDs are Fade To Black with some really brutal drums and Seek & Destroy/Whiplash with Jason Newsted lending a hand on vocals - almost hardcore style! This is real Thrash from the puppet masters!
I honestly cannot find ANY fault. There is so much music! Quantity, Quality & Consistency! This is a whole day's worth of fun and I defy anyone over 30 to not get misty eyed over where they were between 1989 & 1993.
Do what MUST be done to get this - along with Cunning Stunts (Glad I typed that right!)and the masterpiece that is S&M, this is ESSENTIAL!

Watch out!5
Great band, great cd's and great dvd's but watch out because the dvd's are region 1.

Fade to Blackened for all.........5
What can be added here that hasn't already been said?

Most of this was recorded at the highest peak of Metallica's career before their Load & Re-Load albums so you know exactly what to expect. Not only was this Metallica at their best, but James Hetfield's voice was at it's strongest and greatest, before tragically being blown apart, ironically by this very colossal tour!

This tour also represents the dividing line between old and new metallica, and whilst I am not someone who dismisses the new stuff, I can appreciate both periods. But once cannot deny the relentless energy showed in "the old stuff", which is magnificently showcased in this boxset.

If you're a fan of metallica, then this is a must purchase, regardless of what era you prefer.
