triple joy
these three men bring you such musical blizz, each fantastic on their own, but packaged together the synergy is luvely xx
A bit of a curate's egg...
...good in parts. I had high hopes for this album when I spotted it as I know both Richard Bona's and Lokua Kanza's other albums and saw Bona live at Womad in 2004 (he was the best thing I saw that weekend). So getting three of the best africa artists recording at the moment together to create a sort of "supergroup" seemed like a fine idea. Unfortunately they way the album's been done, rather than creating a synthesis of the three styles, each artist has composed four tracks pretty much in their own normal style. Richard Bona's in particular simply sound like four tracks which might have been taken from his own albums, though Lokua Kanza sings lead vocals on one.
Having said this the songs are all pretty good, with Seven Beats in particular being a superb, though short, example of Bona's Jaco Pastorius like bass prowess. But as a whole this is a bit of a missed opportunity not being as satisfying as Bona's recent album, Munia, or Lokua's, Toyebi Te.
