An interesting collection of ideas
This was actually the final In Flames album I heard, the first being Jester Race and Whoracle, so I'll start by saying I might be a bit biased in that respect. The album gets off to a great start with the heavy bombast of 'Behind Space', which is almost an archetypal melodic death metal song with riffs that make me wonder why these god awful metalcore bands barely claim to pay any debt to In Flames.. If the rest of the album stayed like this It would be superb, but unfortunately I feel the songs lack a coherent structure or (dare I say it) catchy riffs that would make them successfully executed. It's obvious that the ideas are there, and these are ideas developed to nigh-on perfection in 'The Jester Race' and 'Whoracle, but some simply don't work ie: the violins in 'Hargaltan' and the dull mid-paced romp of 'Everlast part one'. The following sequel to the song with it's acoustic guitars and female vocals is an interesting touch, though. I can't help thinking however that the album really is just a scrapbook of ideas oddly pieced together. Die-hard fans who haven't heard the album should buy it if only to see how the band evolved over the years, but I doubt this will do much for fans of the newer In Flames sound, and certainly not for fans of the dreaded 'Soundtrack..'.
death metal at it's best
although i'm used to in flames' newer albums ('clay man', 'reroute to remain' and the latest 'soundtrack to your escape)i also like a bit of 'proper death metal' as some would say and find that this album does the job just fine, when i first heard it, it was a little more extreme than i was used to, but it soon grew on me, the thrashing guitars and amazing growls held me in awe of this amazing band.
WARNING: if you are used to in flames' newer albums and are a bit afraid of more 'extreme' metal then don't be scared when you hear this, coz thats what it is, and it's brilliant.
