a better education
Got the vinyl version, so I can't vouch for the mixing, but knowing Mr Vega I'm sure it's faultless. Sweet collection; captures the period where disco becomes house. Fair few on here that keep turning up everywhere, but they're none the worse for it. If you don't know at least half the tracks on this then I can't think of a better place to start. Particularly sublime are essentials from Idris Muhammed, Joubert Singers, Cloud One and The Clash. Lots of lesser known tracks from big artists here which surely should have deserved more airplay, such as Booker T and the MGs and Chocolate. Standouts, and new to me, were I Wanna Rock You - Giorgio Moroder, a seroiously infectious disco jam and Lamont Dozier's version of Going Back To My Roots which shames any other attempts made on this piece. Both discs work up slowly, the first particularly so and neither end up forcing you to dance - plenty so enjoy sitting back. One to put on early at a party; bring 'em up to date. Or one for the road, leaving home. Only 4 stars as it is, after all, a collection of classics.
Bugged Out! produces there best yet
After the previous Bugged Out! compilations were somewhat of a let down for me(though im not diss'in them totally, just didnt live up to what i expected), Ivan slams tune after tune of fresh, original material that combines the hype of electro/electro clash with a dip your head down and groove feel throughout. This release undoubtably will put Mr Smagghe more firmly on the underground map.
Dance floor wizardry
Along with Tiefschwarz, Ivan (one half of Black Strobe) is one of them producers and D.J.s currently part of a very exciting scene. I don't really know what you would call it, I would like to avoid using the term 'electro-house' because that sounds like one of those sub-genres the media have made up that will soon turn into a passing fad. It doesn't really matter what you call it - I mean its techno, its house, its electro, its acid - its everything! Its just quality dance music. Ivan keeps it interesting all the way through with colourful and energetic tracks like the crazy 'Splitting atoms' and Tiesfchwarz's amazing remix of phoniques 'the red dress'.
This is the real deal, its one of them mixes which seems to capture all the spirit of acid house and combines all the best elements of dance music from the past to the present, whilst managing to keep it sounding fresh and futuristic. Flawless
