Product Description

Spyro Gyra has been making high calibre, accessible jazz fusion records since 1976, and 2004's THE DEEP END adds impressively to the band's track record. True to form, THE DEEP END ranges in flavour from easy listening to funky explorations that incorporate samba, Caribbean themes, and rock. The musicianship of the group's two core members, saxophonist Jay Beckenstein and keyboardist Tom Schuman, is top-drawer as usual, as are contributions from guitarist Julio Fernandez andvibraphonist Dave Samuels (who appears on several tracks, including two low-key groovers, "Beyond the Rain" and "WiggleRoom").
The multi-part "Monsoon" is Spyro Gyra at their fusion-based best, moving from lilting, Indian melodies, to lounge swing, to heavy blues-rock riffing (by way of Fernandez's guitar leads). But audiences fond of the group's softertendencies will not be disappointed; "In Your Arms" and "The Crossing" are pure light jazz, with delicate rhythmic support, and airy melodies courtesy of Beckenstein and Shuman. Such nimble, sophisticated gear-shifting testifies to Spyro Gyra's reputation as one of jazz's most popular and commercially successful acts.

Customer Reviews

A pure delight of light instrumental Jazz music5
Spyro Gyra - The Deep End is light Jazz funk instrumentals. The 11 tracks are a slow to up-tempo music sounds, but track 3 `Monsoon` will be your favouite track on this album, it has been produced with an Indian Orientated sound, but when the saxophones come in it lifts this great track in to a classic sound that you will come back to play over and over. The other delight on this album is the track `Beyond the rain`, a very pleaseing sound in light jazz.
This Hybrid Multichannel Disc plays for 64min and 54 seconds and all 11 tracks I have enjoyed playing many times in the evening to relax.
I highly recommend this import CD (USA) of Spyro Gyra as an introduction to their instrumental work.
