Customer Reviews
The quality is starting to dip?
Definitely a lot patchier than the preceding two volumes. If those two volumes could each comfortably yield a decent cd of top-notch material, this one would be struggling. It doesn't have the "killer" opening sequence of the second volume. (Or the volume one bought in Portugal, which has a different track listing from the product listed here.)
The upside is that it does feature selections from many Brazilian "heavyweights", such as AC Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina, Baden Powell and Adriana Calcanhoto. The downside is that this double doesn't, for me, quite hit the spot. There's too much which disappoints, which is extremely surprising, given that it was compiled by Gilberto Gil. (Sorry GG.)
However, there are a few highlights. "Preciso" by Margareth Menezes is a really pretty song, for example, but it's the only real highlight of disc one. Joao Gilberto's "Zingaro" is pleasing, but not as good as the stellar selections on the first and second volumes.
The second disc is an overall improvement on the first, for me. Joao Gilberto's "Caminhos Cruzados" is a nice selection and Baden Powell's "Canto de Ossanha" is simply fabulous. The personal highlight of the second disc is a trio of beautiful weepies, starting with Renata Arruda's "Busca a Vida", continuing with the very pretty "Se Eu Nao Te Amasse Tanto Assim" from Ivete Sangalo and culminating in the heart-melting "Devolva-me" from Adriana Calcanhoto. (The last is almost cruelly short.)
Thereafter, the final selections almost pale into insignificance. They serve, frankly, to DIMINISH the overall quality of "Chill Brazil 3". Well, that's my personal opinion. Perhaps i should pass my copy to a Brazilian, so as to get someone else's input.
