Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Daughter of original Bossa Nova legends Joao Gilberto and Miucha, niece of the great singer-songwriter Chico Burque, Bebel Gilberto's talents have proven more than worthy of her exalted descent. She has not only helped to revitalize modern Brazilian music but has established it as a major force on the world stage. But are these 13 remixes worthy of her? The answer is a qualified yes. The whole point of this type of exercise is to reveal new facets of an existing track by inviting another artist to collaborate on it--after the fact. Everyone involved with these re-workings displays considerable taste and restraint; thus any negative impressions would have to be completely subjective. The originals were produced by Marius de Vries and were comparatively pop-oriented anyway. Gently-imposed beats and touches of chilly electronica do not freeze the singer's digital hothouse bloom but add an additional dimension. Some tunes, such as Céu Distante, even emerge embellished with a surprisingly genteel, retro finesse. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews

better than the originals4
Suba and Katia B. enthusiasts like myself who were disappointed by the conservative and unimaginatively produced follow-up to Bebel's excellent debut "Tanto Tempo" might do well to look into this collection of remixes.

The angles taken by the various remix wizards - many of them unfamiliar names to me, but then I'm no expert - give the songs an edge that they wholly lacked in their original incarnations. On second hearing they even turn out to be quite good songs as well. I especially liked "Aganju", written by Carlinhos Brown and "featuring" Bebel's mum Miucha on background vocals. (Incidentally, some tracks are co-authored by Didi Gutman of the New York band Brazilian Girls. If you like this stuff you should certainly check them out!)

The tunes are embellished and pepped up by the remixes, rather than deconstructed, as sometimes happens. Electronics and beats are in plentiful supply, but they are used imaginatively, tastefully and tunefully. While the "Tanto Tempo Remixes" did not add anything much to the excellent originals, these makeovers effectively render their source material obsolete. I'm glad I didn't buy the original CD (although I have heard it) and went on straight to the real deal.

It's a generous package too, containing a total of 19 tracks on two disks. My only gripe is that the titles of the tracks on the bonus disk should not have been listed on the disk itself only. (Perhaps their inclusion was an afterthought?) Otherwise, no complaints. This deserves to be considered Bebel's second-best album to date.
