Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Luther Vandross was undeniably one of the most significant balladeers of our time. Since the 1981 platinum-selling release of "Never Too Much", Luther's recording career spanned over two decades and resulted in a lifetime of chart topping hits. Through the 1980's, he recorded a string of platinum albums, including Forever, For Always, For Love, Busy Body and The Night I Fell In Love. He scored his first Grammy Award in 1989 with "Here And Now." His last studio album, 2003's Dance With My Father, received 4 Grammy Awards (including Song of the Year for the title song "Dance With My Father"). Collectively, Luther's body of work has sold in excess of 30 millions records worldwide, winning eight Grammy Awards, numerous Soul Train, BET, NAACP Image Awards and American Music Awards.

The Greatest
I cannot believe no one has reviewed this yet...Luther was the Daddy, the Greatest bar none.
I have given this 5 stars because Luther's songs here merit the maximum award but truth is no artist on this tribute or indeed anywhere in the world can come close to sounding as good as he did.
There are some very good covers and versions on here - it is just impossible not to hear Luther's unique voice when listening. His range was incomparable.
Aside from being surprised Fantasia manged to get on here and Wyclef's version of Always and Forever, it is definitely worth buying this but only if you already have the originals by the original!
Average At Best
The passing of Luther Vandross in July this year was a major blow to not only to his immediate family but to the music world as a whole.Like all true musicians he evoked feeling unsurpassed since the days of Sam Cooke.
It is no surprise to see a host of musicians prepared to devote time to honour his memory. These are all artist that appear to have been picked by the legendary Clive Davis.
The list is indeed impressive but not all the tracks seem to work. Donna Summer's Power Of Love is questionable at best and Fantasia's 'Til My Baby Comes Home is not soul evoking.
It is hard to ask a true fan of the man's music to depart from his catalogue of gems to focus more on this album. The tracks that offer solace are Usher's Superstar, John Legend's Love Won't Let Me Wait and Alicia Key's If This World Were Mine. Anyone Who Had A Heart which features the man himself with Elton John is outstanding if for no other reason than simply because it has him on the track as if to leave his legacy.
The Aretha Franklin track doesn't really work because there is too much deviation from the song itself. The same applies to the Patti Labelle track Here & Now which as we have come to realise are indeed exceptional songs but not given a fair rendition here. Aretha and Patti may have given it their best shot but the out put still remains questionable.
Maybe this would have worked better live rather than in the recording studio but the overall outlay is a little weak in many places. For a true Luther fan maybe stick to the original material.
