Amazon.co.uk Review
Since his inaugural Tru Thoughts release in 2001 Will 'Quantic' Holland has been involved in a staggering six albums (as Quantic, The Limp Twins and The Quantic Soul Orchestra). He has also found the time to remix lots of other people’s tracks, many of which have wound up on this insightful anthology alongside a prime selection of Holland’s one-off recordings. Twenty Seven tracks might initially seem to much, but the fact that there are not only remixes by Quantic but also of Quantic, plus tracks from his forthcoming double album and previously unreleased material such as his funk-tastic collaboration with Mr Scruff, "Giraffe Walk", makes it sufficiently varied. The mix of hip hop, Latin grooves, soul, funk, Afrobeat, trip hop and broken beat--spread carefully across two discs--creates a contagious feeling of musical liberalism, and the calibre of songs like Holland’s remix of Victor Malloy’s "The Girl Who Wasn’t There", "Mishaps Happening" (with new vocal overdubs by Alice Russell) and the Seiji and Matt Lord version of "Don’t Joke With A Hungry Man", testifies to Quantic’s seemingly limitless talent. --Paul Sullivan
Customer Reviews
A must for fans and completists alike
A double CD for nine quid? If, like me, you can't get enough of Will Holland's groovy funk-coloured output this is a real bargain.
It's great to have all his significant collaborations and remixes of stuff by other artists, and B-sides from 12"s from 2001 through 2005 in one easily digestible package. OK, the quality is a little variable, some tracks aren't up there with the likes of Tanto Faz , Gecko Turner and Mr. Scruff, but THEY ARE ALL INTERESTING.
Remixes of Victor Malloy, Future Loop Foundation (funkfest), 'En Focus (cool french rap), Gecko Turner (superb latin groove!), Paine, Dynamoe (dubby funk), Skalpel (two-step techno-tinged funk), Handpolished , MR. SCRUFF (groovalicious, one of my favorites), The Ogyatanaa Show Band (superb bass-heavy Afrobeat remix modified from 1976), DJ Angola (real funky Afro [?] French number), the great Oscar Sulley (afrobeat), Rosie Brown (very Tru Thoughts-y), Awa Band (Afrobeat ,funk guitar with wobbly sub-bass) , Dublex (loping, almost Amon Tobinesque), UFO (pacy, fresh groovy), Tanto Faz (really really good quirky/funky tune).
....along with some outstanding alternative mixes of Quantic stuff for good measure...some real and proper gems here, not out-takes...and sprinkled with that ol' Quantic magic production dust....this is a real bargain!!
Holland's vintage!
Fantastic compilation, well structured to navigate around all aspects of the Quantic panoply without lurching between styles. There are some really funky tracks, some verging upon latin music, some techno-tinged and, of course, a good helping of Afrobeat influences but, being Quantic, these genres are frequently traversed and seamlessly merged. Is there anything that this guy can't put his hand to? Many of the 27 tracks on this bumper value album stand up to anything from his other output, it's not just a money-spinning collection of outtakes.
If you don't own any Quantic then I'd recommend that you check out "The 5th Exotic" first. If you like that then this offering will probably hit the target for you! If you like funk and soul too (as Matt Holland obviously does) then check out the work he's done as Quantic Soul Orchestra.
