Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Veteran UK DJ/taste-maker Gilles Peterson has long been a champion of all things leftfield, independent and jazzy/soulful. His BBC Radio One Worldwide show has been a landmark event for this type of music, showcasing a variety of sounds and artists - from veterans to newcomers - and attracting listeners from all around the globe. The BBC Sessions is a collection of recordings made by some of Peterson's many guests on the show over the last five years. Most of these tracks were aired just once or twice at the time then left to gather dust in the BBC archives, but Gilles has unearthed a typically eclectic selection and compiled them for posterity. The subsequent double CD features covers, jams, versions and collaborations by artists from the worlds of jazz, pop, folk, soul, hip hop and electronica (including Zero 7, Beck, Amp Fiddler, Nitin Sawhney, Jamie Cullum, Björk, Roots Manuva, Beth Gibbons and many other equally hip and revered names), to create a stylish anthology and a wonderful snapshot of innovative music from around the world. --Paul Sullivan
Customer Reviews
Disappointing
This CD came highly recommended by friends and here on amazon. I've given this a month of playing but have decided I can no longer put up with it.The hitherto unreleased tracks from Beck and Bjork would have been better remaining just that, they are both utterly depressing. Roots Manuva track is just appalling, the only glimmer of hope on the whole double Cd in my view is the Fat Freddys Drop track. The rest of the content is filler to my ears.
I have about a thousand CDs and vinyl in my collection and this for my money rates in the bottom 10 % and will never buy anything with the GP name attached. My collection goes back many years and during the oil crisis a few years back an album like this would have been seen as a waste of the worlds finite resources. Could be my loss....... maybe
amazing!!!
Gilles Peterson brings cutting edge and quietly dynamic artists to the forefront of music culture, introducing open-minded music lovers to a myriad of genres, sounds and souls with his radio shows.
Here on CD for the first time are the very best tracks by the very best artists recorded live in session on Worldwide.
Just look at the stunning tracklist: blessed worldknown artists singing and playing from somewhere deep inside!
Be carefull if you don't know any tracks; maybe you'll buy 14+14 albums in the next weeks...
Gilles has gone and done it again!
Taking a potpurri of his favourite live sessions, Gilles Peterson presents us with an amazing display of some of the best and most original artists out there this day with never before released versions from Bjork, Beck, Common, Jamie Cullum, Zero 7... need I go on?!?!
So once again he's made it into my "at the moment top 5ers". I take my hat off to Gilles, bravo!
