Customer Reviews
Beautiful late night music
Silva is actually a very deceptive album. On first listen it seems very easy-going and summery, but on closer listening you pick up on the more complex (but never convoluted) rhythms and the clever electronic touches that give the music an extra dimension.
Some of the songs were written with Arto Lindsay, another great Brazilian heavily involved in the New York No Wave scene and these songs tend to be a bit more edgy. This is supremely subtle music that rewards many listens. I paid a pound for this CD, which must be the bargain of all time!
The return of the master craftsman
If you enjoyed Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo album, then you might like to check out the guru of Brazil's "post-electronica acoustic" scene. Without Cantuaria's superb 1996 album Sol Na Cara the recordings of Bebel Gilberto, Cibelle and Celso Fonsecca would all sound very different. It's unusual for an artist that has been recording music for over 30 years to not only inspire new generations of musicians with his older work, but also his current work too.
Silva is another solid album to add to the Cantuaria Discography. Beautifully hushed vocals. Beautifully strummed guitars. Gentle jazzy arrangements. The rythms as always are striking; consistantly complex, sometimes taking the foreground with flourishes of carnival and electronica. The general mood remains one of chilled contemplation. It might not go far to convincing certain people that this sort of music is little more than dinner party or background music, but for me (and many like me) it is vital. Totally relevant. Totally Cool.
