Incognito return with their 11th studio album, which features 11 tracks, and they are now working live as an 11-piece band. hence the album title is Eleven. Most of the vocalists from the last album, Adventures in Black Sunshine, are again featured--Maysa is vocalist on three tracks, with Imaani and Tony Momrelle also singing lead--but one cut "Show me Love" features a guest vocal cameo from fellow dome artist Carleen Anderson. The album displays all the Incognito trademark sounds so loved by their loyal fan base, stunning horn arrangements, sultry ballads and some outstanding vocals and harmonies. "We Got Music" is certain to be a club favourite, and the instrumentals "Let the Mystery Be" and "Jacaranda" are outstanding.

A bit disappointing
Hmm, Incognito.
I remember the deep joy when i found out the Incognito had reformed in the early 90's and had blasted back into the charts with Almost There, way after their birth in the early 80's as part of the Brit Funk movement.
Since then, a string a albums, and some hits, and there have been some really good songs, tunes and impeccable musicianship along the way.
Recently though, i feel that a lot of their stuff is sounding very samey, very soulful, yes, but there is little that is vibrant and exciting.
The sound and production is so polished that the rawness and excitement has been sterilised out, leaving a bland succession of songs that are merely OK. Incognito have, i feel, 'lost the funk' somewhere along the way. Their excellent instrumentals have, on previous albums, gone some way to alleviating the rather tedious ballads, together with the odd track with a great latin vibe, but this one leaves me cold.
There are a few good moments, but even the up tempo tracks sound like we've heard them before.
I can't therefore really pick a stand out track, because i don't think there is one.
Its ok to play while you're doing something else, but if you really want to hear Incognito at their best, buy Inside Life, and hear the decidedly edgier and funkier sound there.
If you really want an excellent British funk album, track down a copy of Inner Voices by Light Of The World, that is FANTASTIC!
This isn't.
Shame really, but there you go.
Incognito could be so much more than this.
As good an album as Incognito have ever released!
The last three or four Incognito albums have followed a similar pattern for me, which is that, after two or three plays, I'd settle into listening to between three and five tracks, leaving the others mostly unplayed. I never considered it a problem, because usually at least two or three of those tracks are worth the price of the album on their own. However....
....for me, Eleven has broken that pattern. This is an album I'm quite happy to listen to from beginning to end. And, what's more, the second track, "We Got Music" is as good as any song they've ever released.
When they wrote "Let The Mystery Be", perhaps they were considering the mystery of why the band hasn't made it bigger in the UK, given the success they've had elsewhere in the world. Having seen them live at the Jazz Cafe earlier this year, I'm in no doubt that this is simply one of THE best live acts in the country....
....and everything that makes them great live is present on this album: soulful vocals, terrific arrangements, razor-sharp horns, rock-solid grooves, and some of the funkiest guitar/vocoder work I've ever heard, from Tony Remy.
If you're an Incognito fan in any way, shape or form, don't hesitate to add this to your collection. I'd rate it every bit as good as any album they've released to date.
A performance so polished you can see your face in it!
I was somewhat disappointed when I first put the CD in my HiFi as the first track "Let the Mystery Be" sounds(tastes)like turkey sandwiches compared to the Christmas dinner that was "Adventures In Black Sunshine". However, things get a lot better, especially the songs featuring Imanni (2nd in Eurovision 98) on lead vocal. Their attention to detail is incredible and makes other bands, whatever their genre look amateurish. Another great Acid-Jazz-Funk/Soul offering.
