The Best 'Box Set' Ever
Often called `the Rolls Royce of box sets, this 4 CD set is beautifully presented, with lots of rare photos and detailed liner notes about all the tracks. It's not the ideal introduction to Hendrix, more a rich source of interest and discovery for those who already know his work.
The set has a healthy dose (about 50%) of rare, unreleased and un-bootlegged material, with a good mix of live and studio stuff. There are some real gems, such as It's Too Bad (about Jimi's brother Leon), rehearsals for the 1969 Albert Hall shows and two songs from the Experience's second ever concert in Paris in 1966.
As a bookend, Jimi's last studio recording, an incomplete slow blues, is also included. In between, there are live tracks from Monterey, Albert Hall, San Diego, Berkeley and other good concerts, and studio tracks with each of Jimi's bands. Of particular interest are the rehearsals or `next to master' takes of songs like Hey Joe, Purple Haze and Third Stone from the Sun. It's interesting to hear just how much fun Jimi had in the studio, e.g. he and Chas really crack each other up during the recording of `Third Stone'.
Sound quality varies with the source but is pretty good overall. An essential purchase for Hendrix fans. Note that (in Australia, anyway) the most recent release also contains a DVD about which I know nothing.
a great buy for a Hendrix fan but not for the casual listener
This set features: interpretations of album tracks, live recordings, covers, songs not seen on the studio albums and even a cool booklet with a track by track guide. All of this encased in psychedelic purple velvet! (When I bought the set it did not include a DVD so I cannot comment on it.)
The Experience's virtuoso musicianship really shines throughout. There is the awesome guitar of course, but the rest of the Experience's contribution cannot be ignored. Mitch Mitchell's energetic jazzy drums with Noel Redding's and later on Billy Cox's groovy bass make a great rhythm section. The Experience are at their improvisational best throughout the four discs. Some of the interpretations of album tracks are staggering, especially as some are just 'loose jams'. The seven minute Bold as Love instrumental is fantastic, with its soaring guitar sound in the middle. The covers are also enjoyable, with the 'Hendrixed up' Johnny B Goode (concert banter included) a highlight. For those of us not lucky enough to have been around to see The Experience live, this set gives you a taste of what it may have been like; it sounds incredible! The tracks not featured on the studio albums are also interesting. The song Sweet Angel (eventually evolving into Angel on First Rays of the New Rising Sun) has a beautiful melody and is an extremely satisfying listen. Country Blue, (the product of another 'loose jam') is a good example of the band experimenting successfully. The down and out anthem Taking Care of No Business has a sombre theme. However what sounds like Hendrix attempting to be an English pub landlord at the start of song makes me laugh.
I bought this after listening to his main studio albums over and over. If you love Hendrix then you will enjoy this boxed set and the price is irrelevant. However for casual fans and people who have never listened to Jimi, I would recommend his studio albums. They are not only cheaper but better.
Disc 1 highlights: Third Stone from the Sun (because of Hendrix laughing), Burning of the Midnight Lamp, Taking Care of No Business
Disc 2 highlights: Bold as Love, Sweet Angel, Room Full of Mirrors (bluesy version)
Disc 3 highlights: Room Full of Mirrors, Izabella
Disc 4 highlights: Astro Man, Country Blue, Freedom, Night Bird Flying
