Customer Reviews
Live at Tonic - a review
A great, and long awaited live album from the Christian McBride band.
Disc 1 - A great live set with some classics like "Technicoloured nightmare" and "Boogie-Woogie waltz" plus other tracks like "Sonic Tonic" from tenor sax man Ron Blake's album of the same name. This is quality stuff with a raw, funky and very loud live sound with some great sax solos from Blake and some propulsive drumming from the underrated Terreon Gulley.
5 stars for this disc.
Disc 2 - Some good music also with "via Mwandishi" and Miles Davis's "Bitches brew" which a lot of people will be familar with. However, the jam session nature of some of this music plus McBrides own many solos give the disc a distinct lack off cohesion.Just when they get into some serious music they tail off into a little drum/base jam for minutes at a time which leaves you wishing they'd just get on with the serious music.
3 stars for this disc.
Disc 3 - Opens with the quality "E Jam" which lasts a full half hour and is a superb funky jam with Eric Krasno(guitar),Rashawn Ross(trumpet) and some of the funkiest Bariton sax you'll ever hear from Ron Blake.Goes slightly downhill thereafter with Dj Logis and Scratch taking over with some techno/hip hop beats which is o.k if you like that sort of thing.
3 and a 1/2 stars for this disc (for track one alone)
Buy and enjoy disc 1 but pick and choose your favourite bits from Discs 2 and 3.
All in all though a good package at a pretty good price.
One Great Gig
What a great CD! Three discs of awesome live jazz. It's well recorded and has a great live buzz about it. It covers a variety of different feels, from straight ahead, to funk, to New Orleans style shuffles, blues, Hip Hop etc. A high energy, exciting gig.
Features: Christian McBride (acoustic and electric bass), Geoffrey Keezer (keyboards), Terreon Gully (drums), Ron Blake (saxes and flute), Charlie Hunter (guitar), Jason Moran (piano), Jenny Schienman (violin), Dj Logic (turntables), Scratch (beat box), Eric Krasno (guitars), and Rashawn Ross (trumpets).
If you enjoy jazz, you should definately check this out.
