Customer Reviews

This promises to be a good purchase4
I have just listened to this album on the headphones in Virgin - and i was very excited by it.

I dont know much of springsteens work and this 'E- Street band' everyone keeps referring to - so maybe as one clever reviwer pointed out - i am the type of person approahcing it with out any preconceptions.

well i love alt rock music - from Dino jr to pixies to sugar to sloan - and am bored by all the flat sounding supposed 'indie' music by bands called "the ......'s" - so hearing this energetic riff laden fusion of pure rock and roll love and soaring guitars is a breath of fresh air!

with so many psuedo serious self indulgent bands like the editors and arcade fire around - its great to hear some rollocking loud pop/rock again!

this is type of punk influenced 90's pop rock that puts a smile on your face and gets you jumping around, but never gets too commerical ove roverblown. its simple and doesnt try to do anything else.

If your an old cynical pundit - prepare to be dissapointed - it you like music that is energetic and fun regardless of how derivative it is then this could be your cup of tea.

just to note the reviewer was right who said they are aimed to dadrock frans of 80/90's alt and to 'new kids' - but so what they are really good all the same.....!

buy it if you like foo fighters, sugar, sloan, replacements, husker du, matthew sweet.

Keep playing it until you 'get it'5
When I first received this, I played is a few times but remained immensely disappointed. Some months later, it was the next record on my MP3 player and I was too lazy to skip over it. To my surprise (and probably to the consternation of fellow tube passengers) I found myself smiling and tapping my foot to the music. I'd 'got it'! On the first few listenings, the repetition of lyrics was disappointing and irritating. But once I 'got it', I liked the repetition. In many other bands' songs, lots of stupid lyrics get written just to fill so many verses (and even then, they might be repeated ad nauseam). On 'Boys & Girls in America', the words are worth repeating, and every repetion adds to the picture being conveyed (of course, you probably will not think this until you 'got it'). So if you've bought it and are disappointed, be patient, it's worth the trouble.

Hoodrats Ahoy! 5
The Hold Steady. Disliked only by earless mono-browed, tooth-sucking, gurners lacking even one single atom of musicality in their entire nut sized cranuims. Forget "each to his own"; there is no excuse for the (thankfully few) tonally deficient freakshows out there who couldn't recognise good music even if it was repeatedly driving back and fourth over their knackers in a steamroller. Based on the way their brains obviously process sound, one wonders how such slack-jawed pencil-neck droolers can even dress themselves in the morning.
