Salsa Dura
Hmm perhaps not for the trendies that GP picked up on his BBC show but the old school fans of Vibrazone and worldwide on Kiss and club nights at Bar rumba will know these barnstorming Latin tunes.. From straight up Montuno's thru funk, bugalu and Jazz the quality never let's up. Special mention for Kako's afterhours orchestra - 100% Salsa dynamite!
Unexpectedly poor
This album is a major disappointment, especially if, like me, you listen to Gilles Peterson's show on Radio 1 and like what you hear.
The only tracks that really moved me - that really stirred my soul - were Wata Wasuri and Last Tango In Paris. The remainder were all pretty bland and lacking in that 'spiritual' feel that normally pervades Peterson's selections, regardless of the genre.
When Peterson writes in the inlay card that "these are all tried and tested cuts - no fillers - believe me Fania had a few..." I find myself thinking that he has gone stark raving mad.
Avoid this album.
oooh yeah!!!
Loads of brilliant tracks from the Fania, Tico, Alegre and Cotique back catalogues. Artists include Tito Puente, Bobby Valentin, Roberto Roena, Ray Barretto...Just typing that list makes me go all giddy, tapping my feet, swinging my hips. Ok, so it didn't really, but you get the point. The tunes on this compilation are so darn good, if you play them to the public they'll be your friends forever. Latin Jazz is the order of the day here, but it does sometimes stray into a Northern Soul sound, and indeed some of the best tracks can be included in this genre. On the whole its all about the beats; only the dullest person in the world could fail to be moved into action as the drums reach full tempo. Put on those dancing shoes!
