Amazon.co.uk Review
After a seven-year gap between their first and second albums, Pink Martini have brought forth their third long-player just over two and a half years later. Based in Portland, Oregon, this dazzling 12-piece ensemble are led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and fronted by vocalist China Forbes. Their rich musical journeys carry listeners everywhere from a ballroom in Havana to a cabaret in Paris. This set even includes a number in Japanese and another in Arabic. With their strings, horns, and sultry rhythms, Pink Martini find the common denominators in these musics from around the globe. Hey Eugene! is perfectly bookended with a pair of decidedly American numbers: their original "Everywhere" evokes musicals from Hollywood's golden era, while "Tea for Two" finds guest duet partner Jimmy Scott adding his emotionally riveting singing. While Lauderdale and his cohorts draw from past times and styles, they never come off as museum curators; rather, they celebrate the vibrancy that makes music timeless. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews
i am obsessed .
I bought the album Hang on little tomato very randomly ( just liked the title) and totally loved it - its so quirky and beautifully arranged - that within a week i had bought the other two. And i have to say Hey Eugene is beyond sublime. i love it it just speaks volumes to me. I love the title song as its my dads name and we played it on his 60th birthday - he loved it as you can imagine finding a song with the name Eugene in it is quite difficult. The song Dosvendanya mon bombino is just brilliant i was singing it on my bus. And the first song on the Album is going to be my first dance song at my wedding. Thats how much i like this band.
I think it speaks to everyone - im 24 and love it, my mum loves it and my friends love it. don't get cowed by the artistic nature of this band put it on when you have a dinner party or when your in a bath and let the lyricism just wash over you. you won't regret it - im off now to buy some carla bruni
A lonely experience. Hmmm.
Most reviewers rave over this.I bought it on the strength of their enthusiasm. I am not so sure now. The band are talented without doubt and the lead singer has a strong clear voice with good range. To me this is a band who are trying a little too hard. They are a little too serious. They are musicians who play for musicians. The music they do has some interesting fusions, and some tracks would be good for Argentinian Tango. But on the whole the album disappointed me. It is one of those that is hard work to listen to, and you have to keep listening to it before it grows on you. Most friends will say to you "can we listen to something else", which makes it a lonely experience. Be cautious in purchasing it.
Album of the Year
I love this album. First heard the track "Hey Eugene" and bought it on the back of that, and it's the best album I've heard all year.
